PETER JACKSON! THE HOBBIT!

So, The Hobbit is going to be one film, then they're shooting this "Lost Tales/Simiarillion/Appendencies" as a seperate? I too thought it was going to be Hobbit in the first part, and Hobbit/extras in second part".

If they're doing Hobbit itself as one film, I can't be bothered with the extra stuff-I'll read Lost Tales, so the Hobbit would be "one and done" for me.

I love LOTR, and have watched a few times. It's not exactly the same as the books, but I get the spirit of it.

We'll see how The Hobbit fares-but I fear he might be trying to catch lightning in a bottle again, and it's going to be less than stellar(IMO)-but we shall see.

Am I the only one who thought that LotR was boring? I mean, beautifully shot. I'd watch the BTS any day. But for me, the movies were painful.

I thought it was boring too. I have a lot of respect for PJ and his crew. I'm amazed at how they managed it. I love the LOTR mythology, but the movies were too slow for me. See Clerks 2.

I think it'll be better. Darker, tighter, faster paced. I hope anyway...

I think del Toro would've made a terrific addition to the LOTR cannon, but I'm very pleased to see Jackson take back the reigns. From what I've read, del Toro's presence will still be felt, cuz he did a ridiculous amount of work in pre-production, and they're not throwing any of that out.

Sonnyboo, I hadn't heard that they planned to do the 1st movie as "The Hobbit", and the second movie as something extra. If true, I think that's perfect. I had previously thought that they were adding material to "The Hobbit" and breaking it into two films. I like the idea of two distinct stories better.

I'm pretty sure they're making The Hobbit into two films, and part of The Hobbit 2 is going to be a transitional period from The Hobbit to The Lord Of The Rings.

I thought they did a really good job of making The Lord Of The Rings into the movies they are. No movie is going to be exactly like the book, which it shouldn't. Have you ever read what Miramax was going to do to The Lord Of The Rings before it fell into New Line Cinema? Wow. It would have been worse than the Eragon movie! Much worse!

My belief was that The Hobbit was to be enhanced at the end slightly to lead on into Fellowship of the Ring but that, fundamentally, it was to be two films from the same book.

Del Toro on the subject:

When you lay out [...] the story beats contained within the book (before even considering any apendix [sic] material) the work is enormous and encompasses more than one film. That's why we are thinking of the TWO INSTALLMENTS as parts of a single NARRATIVE. That's why I keep putting down the use of a "bridge" film (posited initially). I think the concept as such is not relevant anymore. I believe that the narrative and characters are rich enough to fit in TWO films.

Del Toro needs to save himself for At the Mountains of Madness. The idea of him doing it (as he apparently wants to) has been giving Lovecraft fans a stiffy for a couple of years now.

Just loooked, and they are supposed to start pre-production in a couple of weeks, BUT
Strike 1. It's going to be in 3D
Strike 2. James Cameron is Executive Producing
Strike 3. James Cameron is Executive Producing.
Strike 4. James Cameron is involved with this movie.

But cmon, he's not all bad. He did give us Terminator and True Lies. Both fun movies.

I can't wait for The Hobbit. I'm a PJ fan, and I think LotR was really really good. One of my favorite movies of all time (all three).

The Hobbit is a great story. I highly recommend you watch the animated version...as well as the animated RotK.

Cheers.

The Lord Of The Rings is the best film ever. The animated version isn't too bad, and I think I like it better than the RotK one. Both good though, and I used to watch them ALL THE TIME before PJ's LotR came out.
