Nokia N8 filming

Hi guys, i've been lurking for a while but decided to start posting, so Hello!

My question is this, do you guys think its possible to make a high quaility feature using a Nokia N8 or any other mobile phone with a decent camera attached and pro audio/lighting equipment? Would the picture quality be affected in any way if it was played on a large cinema screen? Any thoughts would be welcome, Thanks.

I think one could make a good movie using a Nokia N8
or any other mobile phone with a decent camera. Pro
lighting and audio will go a long way. However and
excellent script, terrific actors and a very talented director
will be even more important.

Of course the picture quality will be affected when played
on a large cinema screen. There is a difference between
super 8, 16mm and 35mm film. There is a difference
between standard def, hi def and film. But a talented
filmmaker who uses the limitations of the camera to
enhance the story could make a very good movie with
any camera.

Welcome. Glad you're out of lurkland.

Thanks for the input guys. The feature started out as a slap stick response to a film called 'a bit of tom jones' ( dunno if you've heard of it?). It's not the best, was shot in my home town for a budget of £100k and won a BAFTA Cymru award. So I thought to myself I could do better with a budget of £0 and filmed on my Nokia lol.

To cut a long story short its now grown from being a lark into something alot bigger with a fantastic cosplayer designing costumes, an nice band doing music, a graphic designer, a photographer and a make up artist all working for free so it was a toss up between turing up on set and filming with my N8 and hoping that if it were to be shown in a local cinema then the quality of the image wouldn't be distorted or pixilated (if that makes sense?) or invest in a DSLR.

Anyway, im rambling now so thanks again guys and I'll post again when i decide what to go with etc.

If you shoot an excellent movie on a DSLR you will be
one of thousands - well, thousands trying. If you shoot
an excellent movie on you N8 you will in a much smaller
group. Could be very good for publicity and marketing.

If you are able to acquire a DSLR, then yes, i would certainly prefer turning up to a set with this, rather than a mobile phone. However, i imagine it would be good fun with only a mobile phone in your visual weaponry.

Do whatever you feel honors the material best. If it calls (har har) for the style that a mobile phone will inevitably bring, then sure, but if it doesn't, then it's a DSLR for me.

It's a novelty, publicity wise.

It's true, when the iPhone 4 came out a couple of people were quick enough to shoot a short with it (the one with trains) and it blew up because of the iPhone buzz, not because the filmmaker had a particularly large audience already.

Look at the artifacts and noise in the hallway and elevator. It also has very limited DR, so avoid any high contrast direct sunlight. This is what they did for the most part.

A DSLR will give you much more control and make it easier to get a decent image.

Also, don't expect to do any color grading on that footage, and get it just how you want on the set.

Hmmm...thats a very good point there directoric! I know the local rag would probably do a piece on us filming regardless of what we film it on but I haven't heard anything about someone doing a feature on the N8 (I could be wrong). Could easily get in contact with Nokia see if they'll help promote in it any way...my mind just exploded with infinate possibilities lol

Cheers for the reply man! I think that has swayed me for the moment but me and a mate will be doing some test filming on the weekend to see how well it holds up in different scenario's so it could and probably will change a million times until we eventually have our first prod meeting
