New Person in here

Okay, I just joined and I'm a little confused about how things work around here. I have a lot of questions, such as online film festivals, film festivals near me, (Suffolk County, Long Island, NY). I posted my website, (its not much, the videos are literally, at most, a minute and a half long) on the "Music Video" section. I am 15 years old, and even though I just started making videos when I got my camera last year, I'm looking into college for being a director (any suggestions?). I am very computer illiterate and I would like to know how I would hook up a better camera onto the computer (besides a memory card) and a where to get a video editing program, or site, one better than Windows Movie Maker 2.1. Thank you, I am excited to be joining this community. :)

Welcome britt! Hope you enjoy your stay. Best suggestion I can give is read last weeks posts in every forum. You'll get a good feel for the board that way. All your questions have answers best thing to do is ask them in the correct forum. It's okay if you mess up you're message will get moved for you. The more time you spend here the better you'll get. I don't see board members screaming (known as flaming) each other like on other boards so newbies are in good hands here. ;)

Relax, read, enjoy.

'sup, good Britt!

I sure wish I'd started as early as you, that's for sure.

I'll be sure to check out the videos on your site in the upcoming day.

Everyone starts somewhere. :)

Are you learning more about making films, while doing these? If so... you're on the right track. The best way to learn is by doing. Determing what worked well, and what did not... and improving from there.

Well... beyond that (with the exception of Avid Free), it's time to start ponying up some bucks for better software. For home PCs, the bigger names are Adobe Premiere & Sony Vegas.

Those may seem to be a bit pricey... luckily they offer entry-level versions, as well, at a reasonable price. (Premiere Elements... not sure what the Vegas-equiv was called). Pinnacle Studio is in the same range there, as well. ~$99

how I would hook up a better camera onto the computer (besides a memory card)

Stumped me there... I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying your camcorder records to a memory card?

oo that much money, huh? Okay, I have a tiny camera, it uses a memory card so I can take the memory card out and put it onto my computer and then edit from there. What I'm wondering is, that, if i wanted a bigger camera how would I hook that up. Well, let me ask you this, what camera do you use, so maybe i have an idea. do you also use the sony vegas or adobe, how is it?

The usual method is via a "firewire cable." Nearly all new computers should come with one. If not a board can be purchased for very little money at a computer store.

Sorry. The firewire cable requires a firewire board to be installed on your computer (it's a physical board that allows you to connect the firewire cable). If your computer is decently new then you should have one built in - if not you will need to find and install one yourself (or have someone tech oriented do it for you).

If you have a flash-card reader built into your computer, you almost certainly have a FireWire connection.

There are some other names for FireWire, btw, in case it does not sound familiar.

Sony products will refer to FireWire as "i-Link"

The technical term is "IEEE 1394"

Do you have any of those plugs?

While it seems you want to get a better camera as well, there are a lot of cameras in a variety of price brackets. Do you have a budget (rough maximum works) in mind?

That would make suggesting a camera a bit easier. :)
