cinematography Need a way to soften.

Ok so I've purchased a Workforce Telescoping Halogen Work Light. Which includes two halogen work lights and a stand for them.

The only problem I am having is softening them. I don't have a budget really and I don't think any old softbox will fit it.

I was wondering if anyone knew a cheap way to soften light or make a DIY softbox. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Blanc/Noir

diffusion gel is what you want. Its fire proof, cheap, you cut into squares and use wooden clothes pins to hold it onto the grille of the lights.

Or

I normally point mine at the wall or ceiling rather than right on the subject.

Or

get used to it :)

Dont try for a DIY soft box, that's what a china ball is for!

I look online for a look of diy softboxes and most of them seem highly flammable on a halogen.

For if I get china balls: Should I get a dimmer because the shade, the socket that plugs in, and a dimmer altogether runs about 20$.

And do you know any good places to purchase a good diffusion gel for softening.

diffusion gels can be had in your city. Look for stage lighting or something like that. Just go to that store, tell em what your trying to do and they will have all kids of diffusion gel choices..

You can also find the on any of the photography store sites.. B&H, ADORMA, etc.. but its best to go to your local retailer, the price will be cheaper (only about $7 for a big sheet) and you can get some real advice. Dont forget the wooden clothes pins. Thats common, even on big movie sets.

Kinda. Small smears of jelly on the filters are more to create streak effects from lights in the scene and such. Nylons probably a way to soften the whole scene, but more of a filter effect than a soft light effect w/o filter. Maybe similar to the "Barbara Walters" filtering? Haven't tried it the nylon thing so not sure.

Soft light is just softer light, more diffuse shadows, less edge detail, etc. Filtering at the camera would look different, though share some characteristics.

Well I've been googling for a place that has any type of lighting near my city and haven't found anything. I think my best chance might be doing it online even though I'll have to pay shipping.

Blanc,

You can use black or white nylon stockings stretched over the camera lens for soften effect.

To aim light through (at a safe distance for diffusion) framed silk, muslin, grid cloth and/or lite-panel and gel materials. I have one of those rolling clothes racks to hang bounce, diffusion, sound absorption or keying materials in.

-Thanks-

NP.. be very carefully with those hot lights.. get some leather gloves and keep paper away. The gel stuff is ok, it wont burst into flames.. :)

Yeah those halogen lights are like stoves, but with even like a washcloth work instead of a gloves. Or atleast like oveen mits, not sure if I have any leather gloves lying around.

remember to keep distance between the light and the curtain due to the "Fire Bad" rule of lighting.

Of course it is probably a false alarm. I'm more interested in what is going on with my FF install that google is sending me site security warnings. Effing Internet. No message when I open in IETab. Feh. There better not be something wrong with my firefox.
