movies Movies that aren't as good as you remember...

I rewatched half of Gladiator... it was very underwhelming.

Cinematic battles have come such a long way - tv shows like Game of Thrones and American Primeval showcase frightening, chaotic war sequences far surpassing what we get in the 2000 feature film of the year.

I'll also take this moment to address the question with the proverbial 'You'

People get all nostalgic about the film Red Dawn (1984), but it's an objectively stupid film.
Patrick Swayze is 32 years old playing a high schooler, do I really need to say more? Okay...

Russian paratroopers descend on a school, but they use rockets against students and handguns against vehicles, the weapon targeting is completely backwards! Top it all off, Swayze loads up his pickup full of food, drives to the mountains, and proceeds to.... hunt for more food.

These fucking idiots didn't grab a single bottle of water at the store, don't seek out a river, what in gods name are they drinking - each others piss?

It's a stupid propaganda film, but when you point out any of these flaws, people get defensive because they fell for the film hook line and sinker when it came out, so they get offended by me. Sorry everyone. It's not as good of a film as you remember.

Had mentioned The In-Laws in the buddies thread, remembering thinking the "serpentine" bit was so funny. And so watched it again, for the first time in probably over a decade, and ... that bit was still funny, and it was about the only thing in the movie that was. Asian and South American stereotypes, funny because they talk funny; a rediculous Senior Wences bit with a talking hand; etc. I had remembered it as kind of a classic, but it was just an imitation of one, just screwball silliness. Not horrible, still watchable, but not a classic.

As a little kid, I remember saying my favorite movie was It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, I think because my father thought it was funny. I remember in third grade, wanting to talk about favorite movies with my desk-mate, Amy, who I had a crush on, and her saying, OK, as long as I didn't say It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. I think I just liked saying Mad Mad Mad Mad World, probably did say Mad Mad Mad Mad World too many times, and i can get, now, why saying Mad Mad Mad Mad world might eventually become annoying.

Anyway, watched it again, recently--actually just some of it; I couldn't get through it all. The thing is three and a half hours long. and it is pretty close, in my opinion, to being unwatchable. Which is a shame since it is filled with a super-star cast: Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Terry Thomas, Jonathan Winers, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Jim Backus, Joe E. Brown, Peter Falk, Leo Gorcey, Edward Everet Horton, Buster Keaton, Don Knots, 3 stooges, and on and on and on.

Anyway.

Thought of it for the Buddy thread before you typed it but held back because I knew that needed a rewatch to see if it's really funny, or just something our dads found hilarious at the time. 😂 Gat damn same as the Mad World one. Are we related?

Highlander

I seem to remember loving that film as a kid. I guess early-80s me didn’t have a very high bar. Tried to watch it again a couple years ago and I… I just… couldn’t. About 10 minutes in, I realized I’d forced myself about 9 minutes too long.
