Had mentioned The In-Laws in the buddies thread, remembering thinking the "serpentine" bit was so funny. And so watched it again, for the first time in probably over a decade, and ... that bit was still funny, and it was about the only thing in the movie that was. Asian and South American stereotypes, funny because they talk funny; a rediculous Senior Wences bit with a talking hand; etc. I had remembered it as kind of a classic, but it was just an imitation of one, just screwball silliness. Not horrible, still watchable, but not a classic.
As a little kid, I remember saying my favorite movie was It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, I think because my father thought it was funny. I remember in third grade, wanting to talk about favorite movies with my desk-mate, Amy, who I had a crush on, and her saying, OK, as long as I didn't say It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. I think I just liked saying Mad Mad Mad Mad World, probably did say Mad Mad Mad Mad World too many times, and i can get, now, why saying Mad Mad Mad Mad world might eventually become annoying.
Anyway, watched it again, recently--actually just some of it; I couldn't get through it all. The thing is three and a half hours long. and it is pretty close, in my opinion, to being unwatchable. Which is a shame since it is filled with a super-star cast: Spencer Tracy, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Buddy Hackett, Ethel Merman, Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn, Phil Silvers, Terry Thomas, Jonathan Winers, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Jim Backus, Joe E. Brown, Peter Falk, Leo Gorcey, Edward Everet Horton, Buster Keaton, Don Knots, 3 stooges, and on and on and on.
Anyway.
