Making films for experiments?

Just wondering if anyone here has ever made a short or a feature for 'the sake of experimenting with a concept or something similar.

When I was just starting I did it all the time. I usually experimented within
a story so I could practice not only a concept or something similar but all
the other aspects of putting together a film.

Of course, not a feature, it's too expensive, but my last short was an experiment on a lot of levels. Shooting in a confined space, a 25 minute film with only one set, the use of soundscape to compensate to a degree for the lack of "action", acting and directing at the same time (failed experiment there). That's what you do on your first films, throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks.

My first short is going to be an experiment at all levels.

I'm intending on using it to try and figure out a little about lighting, but it's mainly an experiment in editing and story pacing, blocking of shots, etc. No sound here, I’ll worry about that on the next short! I may have to act, but I think that'll be okay, as my voice will never be heard (does everybody else hate the sound of their own voice when it's recorded?).

But the whole concept of the film is slightly experimental, I've seen similar ideas, but nothing so set in this single concept as I have. I’m only aiming for something 2-3 minutes long, so I think this’ll be okay.

Plus, it'll be pretty much free for me to make, no more than a few ££'s here and there, so if it all goes to pot, nothing to lose. It doesn't matter. I'm hoping it'll be at least reasonable, but if not, as long as I learn something, I'll still be happy.

Here’s a link to the script thread if anybody fancies giving any feedback:

I make one man band micro-shorts all the time, almost always to experiment with a new (to me) technique or piece of equipment: http://uraniumcityfilms.com/atomicreels

I just have more motivation if there is a story or idea behind them, rather than just experimenting for the sake of experimenting. But the main reason I make them is for teaching myself new filmmaking tricks so I'm better able to communicate with my DPs and other crew members on my larger projects. Been a director for along time, but only last year bought a camera.

Experimentation will always have a purpose, whether that's to further a craft, myself, my crew, my equipment etc.

There are two types of "Experimentation". The first being the primary outings of the film-maker, the first few times when he/she ventures into their field, tests their boundaries and discovers if their chosen profession or hobby is indeed for them. I would call this purely a practise in practise, rather than a form of experimentation, albeit very, very similar.

Secondly, "Experimentation" in the sense of an experienced film-maker. To experiment beyond their genre, style, and like i said above, beyond their boundaries for multiple reasons.
