Magic Lantern cracks “dual ISO” on 5D2 and 6D for 14 stops of dynamic range

The folks over at ML have cracked it again:

Some test footage

Has anyone worked with dual ISO?

I'm not an expert on the tech but it seems to be a hell of an achievement by ML. And a great advancement for the 5DMK2 and 6D owners.

I came across this excellent (free) tutorial on Magic Lantern HDR Workflow by Neumann films which seems (at least to my non-tech expert eyes) somewhat similar to dual ISO.

I don't know, this entire recent 5D RAW and dual ISO dust up feel like academic exercises of little practical value. A few seconds of video on an overprice camera system made for shooting still photos.

The age of the full frame DSLR for cinema is about over, it was a stop gap, re-purpose of existing technology to meet a small market need, were all on to the new big thing now.. lol

Fair enough. I'm curious, what's the new big thing? Blackmagic Cinema Camera?

Blackmagic drops Cinema Camera price to $1,995

I was on a limited budget. At the time a Canon 6D made sense to me... Since I now have one with no hardware budget left, I'm invested. Hence personally, the ML hacks are big for me. I'll be keeping my 6D for some years so any tweaks that can improve it are very welcome - and those ML folks, holy smokes they're doing a lot of tweaking.

There is no direct replacement for DSLR yet so I do not think it is over.

I do also remember the time when movies were shot with VHS and I personally do not miss those times :)

Not bad. I think it looks like a good (but flawed) product. In Philip Bloom's review he said that you actually charge the camera, not batteries. That alone would make me not want to buy. I don't think it's the next "big thing". It will come and go.

Wow, that would drive me crazy too.

But for under $2k, it does offer 13 stop dynamic range, an in-built SSD (solid state drive) for recording RAW. No need to spend $500+ on new hyper fast memory cards.

Plus you can use your existing Canon, Zeiss etc lenses.

And 3 Gb/s SDI output and a Thunderbolt port.

If I didn't have my 6D I would be very tempted... That's a lot of bang for your $$$.

Good point :)

More likely the pocket camera. It's half the price for nearly the same quality, plus it has cheap, removable, and readily accessible batteries and better ergonomics. It doesn't do raw, but most people don't really need raw - high dynamic range combined with 10bit 422 ProRes is a huge step up from the 8bit 420 h.264 in all the competing cameras. I'd say the only thing keeping it from wiping out the DSLR video market at this point is blackmagic's ability to ship them in volume.

Raw on the canon DSLRs is great, especially so if you already have one, but I think it's always going to be a hobbyist/tinkerer type of thing just due to it's nature as a hack and the time needed for the workflow.

It doesn't come _with_ an SSD, it has an SSD recorder built in. But you still need to buy an SSD. And to get a decent sized one will cost you quite a bit still. And if you buy the wrong one, you might find yourself with many dropped frames.

Thanks ItDonnedOnMe.

That I did not realize, thanks for the clarification CraigL.

What I don't like about the Magic Lantern RAW hack is that some people actually DO believe that their 5D is better than something like Alexa or RED just because they think they have huge amount of creativity so they don't need anything else with the RAW hack. The whole ML RAW madness looks little overrated to me ,but it's probably just me .

Can't say I love the picture - there's certainly more latitude but that's about all that's good about the image... Might be down to the lenses used, I'd like to see something shot in raw with CP.2s.

To my eye it looks like it's been sharpened badly, it gives the fine detail a crunchiness and makes the highlights a little harsh. I assume that's something they did in post, although it's possible it's something going on in camera, I haven't looked at a lot of the canon raw stuff closely. Whichever it is, it's really not flattering to the subjects in close-ups, highlighting all the pores in their face and making it clear they're wearing makeup. But hey, purity.

Here's a commercial shot on the 5DIII using ML raw hack.

The thing is that the ML (Magic Lantern) "Dual ISO" is supposed to be a sort of ML RAW+, not just ML RAW.

ML Dual ISO is supposed to give 5D2/5D3/6D owners 14 stops of dynamic range.

As ItDonnedOnMe has mentioned the post workflow for ML RAW is significantly more complex than non-RAW. I think Dual ISO is more involved still.

When I have the time, I'd like to give both ML RAW and the Dual ISO a few test runs.

I have not seen any great looking Dual ISO videos yet. It's too new, just test vids:
