I've seen video of people using those silicone jar openers for a follow focus. I actually picked two of them up, but haven't tried them yet (hmmm, think I just found my afternoon project...).
Whilst technically not a follow focus, it does give you that little bit more surface area on the ring. Hard to make focus marks on though, as given the silicone it's likely to shift around unless it's super tight

I have several zip ties in my bag as backups incase everything fails. Combine two of them to wrap around your lens in a way where only one long end is sticking out.
