editing Lagging in Premiere Pro

Hi, My footage won't play back at real time in Premiere Pro. It lags really bad. Anybody know a solution to this?

I'm editing HD footage from a canon t2i shot at 24fps , 1920x1080. Here are my comp specs:

Memory: 3.0gb
64bit Win 7
Processor AMD Phnom 8400 triple core 2.10 ghz

If you haven't converted the footage from the camera I suspect that's probably your problem. H.264 is not a codec suited for editing, even with a very fast computer.

While we're on the subject, I'd like to ask the tech-heads here if/where you think I should upgrade. I've decided to edit on Premiere CS4, converting to cineform. My current config:

AMD Phenom II X2 550
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103680

3 Gig RAM

GeForce GT 220
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gt_220_us.html

1 TB SATA 7200

I plan to get at least an additional Hard Drive, use it for the system and software, and use the larger one for storage.

I don't know a darn thing about video cards. How does that one look?

Also, I'm currently on Windows XP, but am willing to upgrade if a newer version does better.

Thanks!

Ok well first off, look at picking up some extra ram, its really not too expensive and can make your editing MUCH smoother.

Next whatever you get for a new HD make sure its 7200 or more because anything less will really hinder your performance with editing.

Your video card is not awful. If you want to do a minor upgrade maybe try something like this:

not too expensive and can do full hd viewing and will help seeing slight nuances in your shots. You can also use dual monitors which can make your editing a TON easier.
