Lettuce see what we got this past year:

Video of the Year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuZE_IRwLN :
Justin Timberlake — "Mirrors" ← Category Winner
Meh. Nice looking, but didn't do much fer me. YMMV.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK8mJJJvaes : Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (featuring Wanz) — "Thrift Shop" :
I think this vid is just fun.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-fA-gBCkj0 : Bruno Mars — "Locked Out of Heaven"
I like the song. Lame, recycled concert video altered with effects = L.A.M.E.
This shouldn't even have been a nominee for VotY.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNoKguSdy4Y : Taylor Swift — "I Knew You Were Trouble"
Very cinematic video. Could swipe more music vid design ideas from this than from most - but less expensively!
Whaddap with the extreme cinemascope? Hmm... gives me an idea...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDUC1LUXSU : Robin Thicke (featuring T.I. and Pharrell) — "Blurred Lines"
Lame. I can't believe this was even nominated for VotY. Baah.
Whatevs...

Best Direction
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsUsVbTj2AY :
Justin Timberlake (featuring Jay-Z) — "Suit & Tie" ← Category Winner
Gorgeous. Not badass, but gorgeous.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RubBzkZzpUA : Drake — "Started from the Bottom"
Meh. I think the first "Ray's Film Corollary" applies here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7yCLn-O-Y0 : Fun. — "Carry On"
<chuckles> And I think the second "Ray's Film Corollary" applies here: lotta effort, pretty, but not all that cool to watch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zNSgSzhBfM : Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (featuring Ray Dalton) — "Can't Hold Us"
This whole category looks like "future feature film directors shot at music videos."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmRI3Ew4BvA : Yeah Yeah Yeahs — "Sacrilege"
Wow. My fave so far. Very nice story telling - and in reverse. One of the more interesting videos to actually watch.
Best Visual Effects
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47dtFZ8CFo8 :
Capital Cities — "Safe and Sound" ← Category Winner
Pretty cool effects. Not badass, but cool.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhhnUTNror8 : Duck Sauce — "It's You"
<stupid grin> You gotta watch this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRNGpATRCrI : Flying Lotus — "Tiny Tortures"
Well... that was fairly interesting.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUULBlDcju4 : Skrillex (featuring The Doors) — "Breakn' a Sweat"
Started badass, got boring, then random. WE...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1OTWCd40bc : The Weeknd — "Wicked Games"
Snorrrrrrrre...
Best Art Direction
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEddixS-UoU :
Janelle Monáe (featuring Erykah Badu) — "Q.U.E.E.N." ← Category Winner
I like the premise of the set, but the overall vid just got boring with recycled events.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9uSyICrtow : 30 Seconds to Mars — "Up in the Air"
Gorgeous images, but too random + repetitive, 2nd film corollary impending.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg6BwvDcANg : Alt-J — "Tessellate"
I like the technical principles used. To a meh result, though.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47dtFZ8CFo8 : Capital Cities — "Safe and Sound"
See above remarks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxDdEPED0h8 : Lana Del Rey — "National Anthem"
Interesting approach to a song. Girls got some lips, eh?!
Best Cinematography
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zNSgSzhBfM :
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis (featuring Ray Dalton) — "Can't Hold Us" ← Category Winner
Looks great. Can't say I'd wanna watch it over and over, though = badass video fail. Sorry.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9uSyICrtow : 30 Seconds to Mars — "Up in the Air"
Yep. Looks gorgeous.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GbYR5Aud4Y : A-Trak and Tommy Trash — "Tuna Melt"
BTS → http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwTOxGKlHvo
Poor cameraman. Kidz''ll love it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py_-3di1yx0 : Lana Del Rey — "Ride"
Looks good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmRI3Ew4BvA : Yeah Yeah Yeahs — "Sacrilege"
See above remarks.
Well... I'm pretty disappointed.
I was hoping to see more OTT wacky creative stuff and am quite unenthused over the abundant supply of mini-films that are often just random images upon repetitive themes, lacking any real ABC story.
Really wanted some crazy sh!t.
