Joomla is Evil

Why? It may not be as backend-intuitive as blogging-ware, but it's pretty amazing at what it can do. Nice offshoot from Mambo, back in the day.

Right tool for the right job, maybe?

What are you trying to do with it?

It's not exactly user-friendly. It took 2 hours and a ridiculous amount of rigamorole to get this far:

Great. So I've got that. Now I'm trying to figure out how to embed a vimeo video. There's an extension for that. What the fuck is an extension? I don't know, but I download it. Okay, awesome, my free extension has been downloaded. Now what do I do with it? It seems Satan, I mean Joomla, wants me to now upload this extension. What?! There are something like 30 files in this fucking extension zip that I just downloaded. Which one am I supposed to upload? I try all of them. Nothing. And why the fuck do I have to go through this nonsense?

In your administrative panel, go to "Extensions" at the top. A drop-down menu appears. Choose "Install/Uninstall." When you search for the file, choose the file you downloaded (the ONE zipped file) and choose "install." It will unzip it and put the files automatically where they need to be placed.

Trust me, it's a little complicated to start, but you'll get the hang of it. AND, its MUCH easier than learning how to write PHP code.

Email me if you have any other problems.

shoot.. I keep playing with these different self publishing apps and cant settle.. where do I find the embedded vimeo player extension zip? Can I embed youtube too?

I don't know, I've learned PHP and am currently learning another CMS, Drupal... I found it much easier to use straight PHP so far to get the idea of my website in my head turned into something tangible in a timely manner, but then - I grew up with computers at a time when users were required to know how to program.. it was as necessary as knowing how to use a mouse is now - so I may not be the best example... I just generally dislike huge amounts of code in my pages, and all the CMS engines make huge amounts of code (leftovers from the 1200 baud modem days).

Oh yeah, and my main reason for posting - thanks for just throwing down and helping, I love to see that support within any community!

I take it all back. Joomla is not evil. It's actually pretty freaking sweet. The open-source aspect is what makes it so awesome, cuz every nerd on the planet is able to add content, so there's SO MUCH out there.

Joseph likey. I was just frustrated and impatient by my inability, at the time, to get over the hump of the initially-steep learning curve.

Many thanks to Charles!
