IndieTalk: The Movie (Story Development)

Ok, maybe i wasnt the clearest on my description in here, i just gathered that everyone was just throwing ideas up, sorry for the confusion. What i was going to do, is say exactly what has been written above. First we all throw the ideas up. When we finally pick a outline, one, maybe two writers will try and bang out a rough copy of a script. About two will probably be the go, as they can send it back and forth to eachother, correcting eachother. Then when the draft is done, it will be sent to the other people, director, producer, and the other 'writers'. When the feedback come back in, they make the needed adjustments.

All the options for outlines we get will be posted up on the second post for this thread!

Also, my idea, was the people get hypnotized/manipulated at the seminar. They attend cause they are offered something too good to be true. Then they leave the seminar as drones, carrying out what they have been brainwashed about.

Re seminar…

Lets say it’s about the first space visitors to Mars …they say, “Our space technology is like nothing seen before…” “…be the first group of people to visit Mars”

They watch a movie (spin off movie straight away!) and afterwards they are slightly different people?

And or course there is no trip to Mars… Or is there???

The seminar has to be a bit off the wall to get people from around the would to go it… don’t think “101 ways to make you a billionaire” would do…

****
heres another quick idea…

The Game

here’s another idea… lets say a person (or maybe more people) have a mobile communication device PDA, Mobile phone whatever the most hi tec “cool” …anyway he starts to get messages with directions to go somewhere …he ignores them at first but then these freaky things start happen… (like getting a message predicting what is about to happen the next in the next minute…)

so after a while he starts to follow the directions… some lead to rewards… some to clues of some sort… the challenges/directions start to get harder… faced with options …important decisions, a good choice could lead him to a great reward a bad choice could lead to the unknown….

Okay, a new forum has been created for this idea. All threads related must be in here. If this idea is not successful or loses interest, the forum will be removed. Thanks

Cheers indie for the new forum :) Appreciated!

Now every option for the outlines will be the second post on this thread, like i said before. Now i am putting which post number next to the idea, so when you want to add/edit/update your outline, edit that post i list it as, dont keep re-posting for that same idea. If you have ideas for the outlines you didnt create, post as normal, and the original poster can/will update their idea.

Cheers, Kane.

This idea sounds similar to the movie "20 Bucks" -- which follows the adventures of different characters as a 20 dollar bill changes hands (a must see for Elizabeth Shue fans!).

That right there just made me a happy guy for a week lol. I had no idea there was a movie made about my idea. I am glad there was one because I think it is a great indie film idea. Was it any good? All right well back to the drawing board. Anyway so I am finally saving myself time on writing scripts by switching to moviemagic rather than the self formatting microsoft word. I was thinking about Final draft but I like moviemagic better. Anyway, it should be fun. I obviously am very anxious to use the program now so if anyone has some ideas throw them at me and I will start writing some scripts. Jack Ryan

Don't forget that we have someone here that is very good at CGI so we could always go a little crazy with our ideas if LADD is willing to support us with our vision. I dont mean make some crazy fucking world but we could do some pretty cool stuff. Anyway back to work for the govt. Jack Ryan

Jack, if you read some previous posts, we are now throwing in ideas for the outline of the movie. When we get enough, or cant think anymore, well pick one and a few selected will work on the script. Thats where we are at right now.

From what I've read it seems that a lot of folks are throwing out ideas that are more Franchise type ideas. I think off the bat we should pick the best idea without giving a thought to how many sequels we can get out of the concept.

I'd like to start seeing a few ideas that didn't take sequels into account.

I'd also like to see us take money into account during this stage. Chances are, we're not gonna have $100,000,000 to shoot this with. So we need simple High Concept ideas -- something that'll catch attention yet is still shootable on an indie budget.

I'll start us off:

A teen commits suicide but finds that Heaven is filled with the same cliques, pressures, and burdens from the life he meant to escape.

A geek and a prom queen must raise a child when they end up sleeping together at a party

When a man realizes that he must get back the one girl he let get away, he wins her back but in the process falls in love with her sister.

A man finds out his high school sweetheart is now a porn starlet, the problem is that he thinks he’s still in love with her.

Hmm, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to keep the ending open so we could possibly build upon it later.

Don't get me wrong, an ending that allows for a sequel is fine and actually a very good way to go. What I am saying is, let's get one done first before we start the next Harry Potter franchise. A lot of ideas are based on what we'd do in the second third and fourth parts -- we need to get one done first, and it needs to be good enough to spawn a sequel.

Poke, I like most of your ideas. Any of them could make an interesting script.

Thanks. Honestly, they're all older ideas that I've had in my head since last year. I am doing some brainstorming right now. I want to come up with a concept that 1) is High Concept -- the concept of this film being created by an online community will only get us so far in the market place -- and 2) is cost effective -- we're not gonna have the money to do somthing epic, so we need to go a route that allows us to keep costs low while keeping concept high.

I saw Hard Candy last night. 85% of the film takes place in a house and only boasts two cast members (the entire cast is only made up of 5 people, and three of them are only in one scene), but it is ridiculously High Concept --
A pedophile seduces a teenage girl but when he gets her home he finds that she means to torture him for his sins.

That's the kind of film we should make here -- Low Cost, High Concept.

Some thoughts...Since this is an "internet" project, I think that some use of the internet is a good idea. Some ideas:

A guy/girl types one word into google/yahoo/indietalk search (Maybe some funds could be aquired at one time or another for the ad). That word can be Life, death, romance, love, murder, etc. The word will make the difference in the style, and type of movie.

The word leads to a website that truly inspires the guy/girl. You can have the hypnotic part to it like the seminar. Or you can have a tearful rememberance of your prom date. Whatever you have you get a true life changing feeling, that leads to a phone call to a lost love, buying a gun and killing your nagging wife, your joining a "cult" that brings out the worst in you. Anti women, Anti Christian, Anti Jew, etc.

Or you can search for your old prom date, find him/her and the sparks fly, even though he/she says you'd be better off away...romance leads to the discovery of a terminal illness.

I'm getting way ahead of things, but I agree Poke, the thought shouldn't be about the other movies, but about this movie. The others just need something to hook on. The website could be the hook. Or the one word search. You do the episode called "porn", I'll do the episode called "Numbnuts". You have a website that sucks your person into a depressive haze, I'll do the episode of redemption.

Just some ideas.

Chris

how about typing a search into the search engine causes the world around the main character to change slightly. typing death into the engine will cause death to be more evident around him.

A <gender non-specific geek> must find the search term that will return the world to normal after he inadvertently alters reality.

I think the idea might be right uner our noses:

A group of filmmakers from all over the world colaborate on a project through an online forum.

The concept is simple, follow a dramatization the film from start to finish. I'm not talking about documenting this process, I'm saying create a fictional narrative about the process.

Using Filmy's Four Act Structure (this is all fictionalized, including a fictional version of Contempo):

Inciting Incident -- Feeling like a lost voice in the world of filmmaking, one board member (our protagonist, Contempo) casually throws out the idea of creating a feature length film througfh collaboration by forum members.

Act One -- The board goes abuzz with talk of the new project, a concept is decided upon, Contempo starts to feel the burden of the project -- he still feels like that little voice, yet he's been asked to steer this massive ship out to sea -- What can he do, he's just one man?

Turning Point -- One of the more prominent members steps up as a director, thus really kicking the project in the pants.

Act Two -- As the board members throw out ideas, Contempo gains more and more of an idea as to how to accomplish this monumental feat by seeking advice from board members -- he also gains faith in himself and the project -- the project becomes his purpose in life.

Turning Point -- Contempo gets funding from a major investor.

Act Three -- The writing begins, and all hell breaks loose -- board members begin to squabble about ideas and credit, the writers begin flaking out, the director starts to doubt his involvement. Contempo has to pull it all together or it will fall apart cause the investor is also starting to doubt.

Turning Point -- Some board members drop out of the project in anger and begin to develop their own
project to rival Contempo's. The investor hears this and pulls funding.

Act Four -- Contempo risks everything to keep the project afloat. He sells his house, his car, cashes in war bonds his beloved grandfather gave him as a child -- he goes for broke. But the ship continues sinking. In the eleventh hour, he goes to the forum and posts a giant article on the project -- why he tossed out the idea in the first place, how he felt when he was asked to produce, how seeing the board act together as a whole made him proud, how certain board members gave him good advice, how the director pitching in was the best thig to happen to the project, how he felt when the bickering started, how the seperation of the site hurt him, how he sold everything to keep the project alive, but ultimately how he failed the board. He apologizes not being a good captain. He logs off and goes to bed a broken man. He goes back online the next morning to find that everyone has responded to his article in a positive way and people are offering all kinds of things -- money, services, etc. The board is charged by his post and the project's engine revs back to life. A new investor with deeper pockets hears about the project and fully funds the film. FLASH FORWARD: One year later, the premiere is taking place at an old theater, many of the board members in attendance are meeting face to face for the first time. Contempo stands up in front of the packed house, thanks everyone for coming. He congratulates the board members on accomplishing this feat, but one by one the board members rise in standing ovation for Contempo because he was such a good captain. The curtain rises and...

THE END

I just threw this together as I typed it, I'm sure it could be improved. But I think this could be a winner. So basically the concept is -- a group of filmmakers collaborate through the internet on a film about a group of filmmakers collaborating through the internet on a film.

That's High Concpet, and it could be done low cost.

A lot of the action takes place in houses while the board members sit in front of the computer screen. The only board member we follow outside of the forum is Contempo because he is the protagonist. We see Contempo's doubt and fears through his interactions with the outside world. We see his leadership through his interactions with forum members. So sets and locations are minmal.

We need a clear cut antagonist (a board member who is pissed at Contempo because his/her idea wasn't chosen). He needs to be dastardly and petty, willing to say or do anything to disrupt Contempo's idea -- maybe Poke should be his name (in all seriousness, I'm not trying to sabotage Contempo's work, I just want to be immortalized as a bad guy that i truly am beneath this soft, lardlike exterior).

I'm still rolling this around in my head, but I want to hear from other members.

Poke

PS sory if therez sum mispeld wurds.
