A sneaky preview of the music promo I've been working on for the past week…

(Ungraded, straight out of camera. And yes, that is a real fireball.)

shooot.. real fire is very cool !

tell us more technical details on this particular shot while we wait for the unveiling of the big picture..

camera?
lens?
how far from the camera was the talent?
how far from the camera was the fireball?
how did you make the fire ball?
etc..

Looks awesome.

Have no idea what this is for, but can't wait to see more of that fireball ;)

Well i'll be damned.

So, when are we to see this project, in all its fireballin' glory?
Mostly depends on the band, but hopefully within the next two or three weeks.

Lookin' hot, chilipie. I can feel the heat from here.
Cheers!

Running two 550Ds/T2is, with a 50mm f/1.4 on one and 24mm f/1.4 L on the other - I can't remember which camera I took the screengrab from. The actress was around three metres from the fire, and the camera another two metres or so from her. The fireball was created by pouring coffee creamer from a height onto a row of lit firelighters - the creamer only burns in the air, and extinguishes as soon as it lands on something. I'd read about this idea years ago, but only just found a suitable project to use it on. We lit her with a soft, wraparound key, using a 2K open face with full CTB camera right bounced off a large (approx 2m x 1m) sheet of polyboard, with an identical bounce board pushed up against the left of the cameras to wrap the light around her. By balancing to 5600°K, the fire looks even warmer.

did her cut lil butt get burned ???

I WANT TO KNOW !
Cheeky ;) It all went very smoothly and we didn't have any injuries… I did burn my knuckle earlier in the day while getting a cake out the oven, but I don't think that counts.

LOVE that video! The final shot is going to have lots of Super 8 style grain and light leaks all over it, so should end up looking pretty interesting.

That aint AMERICAN english... Where does one find the bottom of ones garden?
Well, that would usually be the end furthest away from the house, but given that there's a rather large hill between my house and where we were shooting, it could be referring to altitude too…

oh man, you sent me down the coffee creamer firebomb rabbit hole, I wish now I hadn't asked! How did you achieve safety?

Your bouncing the 2k off a board to soft light the subject, the other board is bouncing the fire light, correct?

Good stuff.. I need some bigger bounce boards..

Haha, it's great fun! We did lots of tests without people half a month before the shoot, so we had a good idea of the quantity that could be safely used at once. We ran rehearsals on the night first without and then with our actress, putting down markers so we knew what distances were safe. The most important factors were probably using consistent quantities of coffee creamer so there weren't any little surprises and shooting on a wind free evening - if there had been anything more than a light breeze, we would have had to abandon the shoot.

Almost… the 2K has its hot spot on the bounce board on camera right, with its spill on the bounce board on camera left, creating a key and fill light from one source. We did bounce a little of the firelight back onto her face with the large bounce boards, but that wasn't their primary prupose. There was also a 1m square gold/silver reflector that I forgot to mention positioned below the cameras and angled upwards, which reflected a bit of firelight back at her.

Had to look up what coffee creamer is and found a wonderfully sarcastic Wikipedia article... :D

What's the song that goes with the fire? Is the girl the singer? Is it the same singer as the other music video you did?

Dude! Prometheus is hot (pun NOT intended)! Cool shot, absolutely epic and thanks for giving us a setup breakdown as well :)

I don't want to give away the song (it's yet to be released), but the band are from Manchester and called Tall Trees. The girl's not in the band, and I haven't worked with the band before, but we have used the same actress in the past.

Awesome, glad you like it!

Looks like this is going to be good!

Great lighting, chili. It's going to be even better once graded.
Cheers Ernest, looking forward to getting my grubby little mitts on some light leaks and jittery grain in the grade…
