Hello, new here.

Hi, I've just registered here, been lurking a while.

My name is Marty, and I work with a company that does a bunch of work in the the film marketing/promotion space, and we also do quite a bit of social media "activation" for titles. I have a particular fascination for the independent film and how it reaches a paying market even though we mostly work on the "classic" big Hollywood stuff.

The arc of my career is unusual - I started in film and television in the early 1980's, on the set, as a PA, eventually a first AD and then digital special effects and post production, switched to interactive digital communications in the early 1990's and eventually the old and new converged for me about 5 years ago, as more and more media and entertainment projects became about digital marketing, distribution and commerce.

I'm simply observing the conversation here, it seems like a mostly mature and civilized forum for people who have a passion for making films. I don't really have anything to add to the discussion yet, but I did want to say hello.

Hello Marty

What exactly does that mean? I've not heard of that term.

It means using Social Media to ensure that interest in a film turns into asses in seats in the theater.
In short - "likes" are nice. Ticket sales are better.
So we do things to help ensure that the social audience isn't just talking about the film, they are also going to the theater to see it. That's "Activation."

martyf,

Welcome, I'm pretty new here myself, but rather than "lurking", I just signed up and got to give an opinion on a few things which I hope helped some people.
Since I was researching something at the time for my newly formed production company, I even created a thread.
Wow.

Due to the fact that we too are using a certain site to obtain "Likes", which we're using as a gauge of pre-product awareness, I'd appreciate it greatly if you could provide any tips.
So far, it looks like it's mainly actors who'd clicked the LIKE button, and since we're currently advertising for the leading roles, it's hardly surprising.

Still, more awareness and more LIKEs would please us a hell of a lot.

Thanks for your time.
