Guns and Movies

So I want to make military sci-fi (and some historical films) as that's what I'm into. Right now I just putting down what guns I would use to represent the guns in my universe (half boredom and half I think it will be make things easier in the long run).

So, how exactly do you gets guns? Do you contact the manufacturer (for example Bushmaster for the ACR) or are their third-party like people out there? What if you want to modify the guns, do you have to contact the company? How costly would guns be?

The thing with military sci-fi is that, if you're using energy weapons, you may not be able to use the standard military props. If, on the other hand, you're using conventional firearms, as in Aliens 2 and Stargate, then you can cut costs.

For energy weapons I plan on using toy guns. Seems less expensive and I think most people do that.

I've been thinking about this thread.

The first Star Wars - Ep IV - used conventional sub-machine guns, or those that looked like sub-machine guns. So a sci-fi producer should be able to go to a weapons master to get conventional props. The best way to approach this is, as Rik says, to hire a weapons master or at least get ideas from him.

I got a new idea today, so thanks for starting this thread. :)
