Free sound effects anywhere?

I found free music okay but am looking for free sound effects...is there a website that offers free downloads? I found loads that charge a few bucks for a few seconds...they are sounds I cannot do on my own..well not now anyway.

Merci.

Feresound.org keeps a list of files and everything you need to "attribute" for you. ... . heres a sample from my attribution list..

Freesound Attribution Form

This form below lists all the samples you downloaded from freesound with some data.
You can use this form to attribute samples to users when you use them.
If there are files you didn't use, you can delete them from the list.

The list is sorted from the last file you downloaded to your first download ever...

There's also an html version of this list.

also.. here is the info from the FAQ

Where to put credits

Every time you display your song/video/theatre play/... you must try -as good possible- to credit the users you took the samples from.
Some examples:

* an mp3 song: credits on webpage where you host the mp3 has the credits!
* a song on a cd: credits on your liner notes have the credits!
* a podcast: credits on the webpage where you host the podcast has the credits!
* a video/movie: add the freesound credits to video credits, and if needed on the website where you host the file
* a theatre play: make sure credits appear on the leaflets you hand out
* ...

How to credit

Have a look at this page: http://www.freesound.org/usersAttribution.php
It lists all the files you have downloaded in the past!

If you don't feel comfortable using this format list the files as follows:

Quote:
This song/... uses the following sound files from Freesound (http://www.freesound.org):

door slam, car start, birds whistling from plagasul
squeeky bike from acclivity
berlin tram sound from jacky-o

Etcetera.
Feel free to change the style of text, or the length of the introduction, this is an example, not a rule...
If you can, add url's to the sounds.

......

simple enough

See? Be lawful. Don't steal other people's sounds.

I think Freesound.org is a misnomer in that it implies "FREE SOUND" and people disregard the credit listing obligation - hence, this thread.

I don't have a problem with the credit part. I was noticing on some ole Britcom...they credited Foley for sound effects.

Anyway...I was looking for a multitude of sounds so those addresses will help..thanks.

They all just take so much time to go through and find the exact sound I am looking for.
Like the sound of Crows...not mechanical crows but real ones...anyway...thanks.

Foley is not sound effects (unless someone named Foley did the sound FX:lol:). Foley is the replacement of human made and other sounds (footsteps, cloth, punches, object handling, etc.) done by a Foley walker while watching the picture. If you want to be completely technical, manually cutting in footsteps from a sound library qualifies as sound FX.

That's the price you pay for not having to spend actual money. The sounds on FreeSound vary from garbage to the sublime and it take lots of patience to find what you want. It can also be frustrating when the exact sound you want has too much background noise, is too short or is recorded at a low bit/sample rate.

You should also keep in mind that just because something does not sound familiar does not mean it isn't correct. From my own field recordings there is a huge difference between crickets here in Connecticut, crickets near my sisters home in Vermont and crickets near my in-laws place in New Jersey. And the sounds of crickets in Australia, India or various parts of Africa will be wildly different from anything that I am familiar with.

You should also keep in mind that when doing sound design it is the emotional impact of the sound that is more important than the geographical accuracy. Even something as seemingly mundane as ambiences/backgrounds are actually many layers of sounds. In one scene of the feature I recently completed I had over a dozen different layers of fire sounds which I varied (using both volume and EQ automation) depending upon the angle of the shot, the dialog and the score.

I remember fooling around with sound effects in Disney world.

Anyway...I had no joy with freesound.org but found some success with findsounds.com

I had the scan through the 'thunder' to find one that was perfect for me. I wanted 'crows' but they all sounded too mechanical. I did get a real good 'howling' though...and telephone ring.

What I want is a telephone ring from the callers phone not the phone itself...I haven't found that on findsounds...its all ringing. If that makes sense.

In movies, I am starting to pay attention more to those background noises than I had before. I notice the dog in the distance barking, the car driving by, maybe voices trailing off...

You live you learn and I have learned more than I would at any school ,,, I can tell you that much.

Goodnight

No not a dial tone...I think its just called a telephone ring...but its not the ring ring sound you hear when YOUR phone is ringing but the ring sound you hear when you are calling someone...

Say you are calling your dear ole aunt Mavis on the phone. You dial her phone number and your hear her phone ringing...thats the sound I am looking for. But when I look up phone rings it only offers the phone ringing...

I feel like I am doing an Abbot and Costello skit.

Anyway, I don't know if there is another name for it other than phone ringing.

Thats exactly it. However I have no joy in downloading anything from that website and I have no clue why.
I can download from findsound but it doesn't appear they have that sound...at least not under phone ringing. I wasn't sure if that was the correct name for it.
I might have to record it myself but it will probably sound like crap.
