forgive my ignorance...

ive seen people say they filmed on cameras like nikon d70 and stuff, but arent those SLR's? how do you get sound also?

There is a new wave of filmmaking being done with digital SLR cameras, especially those that offer frame rates similar to video cameras. The best way to do sound when shooting with an SLR is to capture it to a separate audio recording system and then syncing the audio and video in post production.

Very famously the previous season finale of television's "House MD" was shot entirely on Canon 5D DSLR cameras.

Yes. They are SLR cameras. With a video feature. The
Nikon D70 and stuff have a microphone input so you
can plug a mic right into the camera. But many do as
Uranium City mentioned and use a separate audio recorder.

I have found those to be very awkward when shooting
video. Most will use a tripod.

No need to worry about you ignorance here. Most of us
are ready and willing to help you out.

And people are taking pictures with their telephones. What is this world coming to?!

Go to my profile, browse all the threads I've started, and look for the one titled "Pros and Cons of DSLR". I'd link it for you, but I'm typing this from my phone. Lol!

I have a little 4 channel video/audio mixer , coming off the camera's I only use the video feed I run my mic into the audio feed , this way you can use multible cameras and your audio will remain constant , just run the mixer into a dvd burner or some other storage device. It will keep you from having to synk it up
