Feedback on kickstarter video needed

I'm really sorry this hasn't worked out for you :(

I've been thinking about it a little and I think the biggest reason for the failure is because you're raising money for a business rather than a project. People will see your idea and, much as they may like it, they're seeing something that should, one day, be making you a good income. The projects that tend to do well are the niche passion projects where people can play to the inherent philanthropy of the human race 'I really want to realise my dream' rather than 'this is a great offer and will be a great business'.

That's my only thought. I think there might be other ways to try this if you are willing to go a different route. Out of curiosity; have you been trying to secure a bank loan?

I have not tried to get investment for this. As a business plan, it works great with donations prepaying the expenses, and allows me to get in and out in 4 months. (Deathworld in 6 months). If I turn this into a normal commercial business plan, with 50k I have to repay, it no longer works as a simple effort. I'd have to go into wide scale marketing against companies with 100x my resources, charge higher prices, use up investors that I need for other projects, and worst of all obligate my time for probably a year or two.

With people trading me a dollar for a clip, it keeps things simple. Without the donation model, this is more trouble than it's worth. I'd like to help other people out, but when as wheat said, people only want to give money to the self absorbed, (give me money to do something that's really just for me and my friends), I'm barking up the wrong tree. Seeing folder chair sculptures for burning man raise 25k while my international resource for filmmakers died at $400 makes me believe this. I'm in a whole different world than my audience.

I'm not bitter, just a little irritated, I was doing this to help others more than myself. I got respect for that here at indietalk, but not from the kickstarter community. In general, I feel worst that I couldn't extend this help to beginning graphic artists and commercial content creators. Stock footage will often cost half their budget, and it makes it twice as hard for them to make a living. I would know.

Right Nate, you sold me on why its great, but thats not what your Kickstarter vid does. I suggest you do a sit down interview and explain why this is great idea, use lots of "I" messages.. I love films, I want to help, I need to give something back, explain how its NOT about a million dollar biz, but how you want to make a sustainable resource for the community.

I think you over analyzed my comment. The point I want to emphasize is that kickstarter is about relationships and not about investment. I want to be part of whats happening with the project, not a faceless investor or a nameless client. Im further "alienated" from you by your not being in the video, I think thats crucial. It feels like a ebay transaction and not a community moment.

FYI: Im a hard edge right wing gun nut, so Im not all touchy feely, but I think thats what kickstarter is and how it works best.
