I've heard that at the very start of the screenplay, before the first slugline, you're supposed to have a FADE IN:

Why is that? It doesn't seem to be needed. Have I heard wrong?

No, it's not necessary. Put it in if you want, but it's really just a cliche.

True of "transitions" in general I think. If HAS to be a "FADE IN" you put it in, if it could be something else, leave it out.

I actually always notice the first and last shots of movies. I always thought the Fade In and Fade Out thing was the traditional way to write a script.

Nothing whatsoever wrong with putting them in there. OP was just asking if it was necessary, and it isn't.

I've always felt that whatever way it takes to get the viewers attention, do it. Fade in is one of different ways to do it.
