DeNiro and Scorsese.

Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese have been my biggest inspiration to be a filmmaker, honestly.

But it's kinda sad to see DeNiro do movies that are beneath his awesomeness. Anyone know when he will team up with the legendary Scorsese again? I feel DeNiro's career needs Scorsese. We could have Scorsese's new boy DeCaprio and his original boy DeNiro in the same flick. That'd be cool.

He's formidable when portraying an extension of his true character, so it's been said, and we can see that in many of his iconic roles.

You can't deny the man a chance to take on a new challenge, be that applying comedy to his roles or something even further from the man we admire.

We'll always have his treasures, i'm sure.

I think Bob should just retire quietly and let us treasure those few films in which he is good...

Obviously he's not a patch on what he was, but that was never my contention. He's still one of the best ever and was outstandingly prolific in the 70's and 80's. Nowadays, not so much.

However, to answer your question; Casino, A Bronx Tale, Jackie Brown, Wag The Dog, Meet the Parents. That's just off the top of my head. I doubt there are actually many films where his acting is going to be poor, just his judgement in picking which films to star in.

If you want, I can make you a pre-1991 list that will make your 'few good films' look like an even more fallacious statement.

I would say that in none of those films does he act well. A couple of them are good films, but De Niro has been on terrible form since Cape Fear. He wasn't even that great in Cape Fear...

I will give you The Godfather, Raging Bull, Mean Streets, Taxi Driver and The Deer Hunter, with a couple of others during that 'Golden Period' which are pretty strong (if samey) performances. But as soon as he let go of his weight he let go of his intensity and that was what held him together as an actor.

I still well up with triumphant aplomb when he says "I'm not sleeping" in Awakenings. And it's difficult for me to imagine a more human Frankenstein's monster.
