Deathworld: List your Equipment

This thread is for all the members joining the Deathworld project. Here you can list any equipment that you are bringing into the project, including computers, cameras, lenses, lighting, sound, ordinance, mobility gear, recreational stuff like Xboxes, etc.

This will help me get an idea of what we have to work with as I plan out our space in the new production facility

I don't think there should be threads that only a few members can contribute to. Sorry.

Wouldn't this stuff be better discussed in private?

Sorry there Nick, I just don't have our web site and internal forums set up yet. Right now this is the best place for me to get a message seen by all the members. Since the team is made up primarily of indietalk regulars I think it's somewhat relevant to this forum. It also gives those considering filling our last remaining slot an opportunity to see what resources are going to be available via the collaboration.

We'd also be wide open to any equipment donations that anyone else on the forum would like to help us out with. So in that light I'd say this thread applies to all. Finally, the project is to be transparent, so information about what we are doing, what we have, and how much it costs, should be available in a place where the public can research it as a case study.

Panasonic GH2
20mm Panasonic lens
maybe some vintage Nikon lenses(I'm half owner of a set; not sure how we'll split)
1.33x anamorphic lens adapter
Intel Core i7-920 PC
2x 22in monitor

Non-video related:
Xbox 360
PS3
Wii

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things.

Edit: I'll also have internet access for at least the next 5 days, Nate. I guess Maine isn't as technologically backwards as I feared.

T2i, with 18-55mm kit lens
Zoom H4n
Decent, but not super-powerful PC, 24" 1080p monitor
Pair of KRK Rokit5 audio monitors

Sony 5.1 surround sound, strong enough to blast the crap out of a small/medium room
Xbox 360 (NCAA Football 12, NBA 2k11, Fight Night Champion)
HD projector (inexpensive, so only works in dark)

Oh c'mon. These guys are just trying to do something. You can agree or disagree with how they're doing it, but they're trying SOMEthing. I would allow them a part of this forum just so we can see what they're up to. I don't see any reason why we can't follow their actions and then judge for ourselves if we want to join them or repeat the process in our own communities.

I would pat them on the back and be glad that they're reporting their doings with some regular basis.

Also they're probably doing it because they feel the rest of us would be interested. I am interested.

Big ups, Aveek! I hear you're contemplating joining the team.

A couple more non-filmmaking issues:

Any of you who think you know how to play NCAA football, on Xbox, had better brush-up, and get your practice in. I'm just sayin.

And how about this -- what non-filmmaking skills are you bringing? I have a Ph.D, in bartending, so you can feel secure than any mixers will have only the best cocktails!

Big ups, Aveek! I hear you're contemplating joining the team.

I am contemplating it. I don't think it's going to happen though. I'm trying very hard to set something up here in Toronto. I am quite content with my life at the moment, in terms of doing work and 'making plans.' I'm trying very hard to figure out what I really want.

We'll see in a couple of more days.

Good luck to you guys!!

Oh c'mon. These guys are just trying to do something. .

Sheesh and who ain't? Is anyone at IT here just to be here?

I'm interested in staying informed on DW but this topic does seem better fit for blog or email. Having said that, have to admit, it's hilarious you guys are all listing your Xbox 360s in the inventory.

I do want you guys to understand that I have nothing but good wishes for this project. CF and Wheat are too of the biggest personalities on the board and I do, of course, wish them every success.

All that I'm saying, and Brian is right, is that everyone here has a project of some kind or another. My last short, The Samurai, was directed by me, DPed by Phil_UK and with music by harpsichord, so IT collaboration is hardly foreign territory. Look at JB Palmer's Mixed Messages, nowt by ITers in that.

This is the 10th Deathworld thread and I think you guys are starting to use Indietalk beyond its purpose. As Kholi points out emails, a blog, Skype or even a temporary forum (would take $0 and five minutes to set up) will stand you in good stead.

Obviously I want to hear about the project but Production Diaries are all the rage at the moment (thank you very much) rather than a different thread for every different issue. I just worry that other threads of interest get lost and people will get distracted when there are threads, like this, which only about 5 members can really contribute anything of interest to.

My other concern is that you guys shouldn't be sharing financial details on a public forum. I think CF raised this is on another thread. Just for your own safety and bookkeeping I think it's important to keep that sort of stuff private.

But please don't mistake my slightly chippy comments for ill feeling towards the project. It's just that a lot of us are working hard on projects and these 10 Deathworld threads are really hogging the attention at the moment.

Well Brian, my good man, you are correct. Who aint? And we're all here informing each other what we're doing. Hell, everytime I shoot a sunset I'm here showing it off. So why can't they? And yes, i thought the xbox listing was hilarious too.

I don't know what a forum is, I don't what a blog is and I diary is. I know that I come to this site. and then I pick and choose what I read.

Anyway. I think we should all just chill and tell these guys to release the details of the video game competitions ( I don't play xbox/playstation etc. I don't know if they're still called video games) :)

I have no problem with the number of threads Nate, and company, make. This is a message board with a forum entitled: 'Making The Film: Getting the film made, from concept to distribution.'. As long as each topic is posted under the appropriate sub-forums within this, I would think they would turn out to be an invaluable, and comprehensive, resource for the rest of us to follow...if we so choose.

This is a pretty easy fix. There is a function available on this board called "Ignore poster", if you have no interest in these particular threads, it's easy enough to just have them dissapear forever. Then you can can find your way to important threads like "Question: how important is it to take off your lens cap" without obstruction.

On the flipside, people joining the forum later in the timeline can easily type "Deathworld:" into the search box, and get a neatly organized stack of threads that show how each detail was handled en route to a startup production company, and eventually a feature production. In the event that we are successful in making it to the theaters, these threads will retroactively form a "walkthrough" showing A to Z how a person can realistically build up to such an effort.

To be honest, that's what I originally came to this forum looking for. A layman's terms explanation of how the people that were getting all the way to the big screen were doing it. Not to complain but I've found surprisingly little along those lines. So I'm trying to provide that resource for others in an unfiltered format.

Is the Deathworld project getting a lot of attention? Probably so, I mean nearing the 100k expenditure mark during just the pre phase, it's one of the single largest projects I've ever encountered on these forums. When people posted 500 threads saying that sundance was just a Ti and a battery pack away, there were no objections. Surely we're allowed to counter that with an alternative theory, one that says making a film takes a lot of help, a lot of planning, a lot of time, and a lot of money. I get the impression some of you really don't want to hear that. That it would be easier if we just sat here answering easy questions like "did you like movie X"

Scoopicman (a good filmmaker that I have nothing but respect for) posted on another of these threads that what we were saying was against everything these forums were about. I strongly disagree with that. I think that the indie film community has lost sight of it's original goal. The goal was always to work your way up to making a great film that people could enjoy, through education, networking, and fundraising. What I see most of the time is what I call "white belt academy", amateurs who are so proud of being amateurs that they have begun to see it as an end rather than a means. You become an amateur as a stepping stone to becoming a pro, but I hear little talk about how to graduate and move on. These posts are here to represent a different viewpoint, one that says decisive and risky action is needed to hit that next level. If you'd rather discuss micro-budget all day, I think you have your pick of reading material here. If you want to hear about the sacrifice, planning and work it takes to really break into a heavily fortified industry and eventually become the Bruce Lee of independent filmmakers, then these threads are here as an option.

You rarely if ever see me drop into another persons thread and tell them I don't think their opinions or information should be heard publicly. There's a reason for that.

To Nick, Kholi, and Brian. Honestly, I think you just don't like me. It seems disingenuous to posture as defenders of the people and overseers of the forum when you're just angry at one person because you don't agree with their methods or verbiage. I've spent a lot of time and money creating something that can really help some people achieve their goal, and I've invited each of you to come and live at my house, and share my equipment. Really, I think your responses have been less than kind in that light. Notice that I didn't act like I was protecting others when I said that, I'm talking directly to you.

For others, I hope that you can learn from these posts, or contribute, or maybe even join us. That's why these posts are here on the world's largest indie film forum. It wouldn't be a very transparent project if I was only dispersing information in my room.

Nate, you're making a mistake and taking things personally.

I don't think Brian, Kholi and Nick mean anything. As a user I like their posts. They're always helpful. And I think they're trying to help me and help you and themselves.

Don't take things personally. We all have to help each other out and look out for ourselves at the same time. Cause Hollywood ain't gonna call me anytime soon.

I look forward to more deathworld posts

I've always been a fan of these 3 guys, and like you I typically find their posts among the most helpful in interesting on the forums. In particular I think Kholi may well be one of the most talented filmmakers on the board.

Perhaps I am making a mistake in terms of taking it personally, but when you open your life up to others and they tell you that no one wants to hear about it, it's hard not to take that personally. I know that my viewpoint doesn't jive with some others, but I think that's the very heart of an open discussion. If we all agreed on everything, there wouldn't be much of a discussion.

What I was trying to point out overall is that every person on here has a choice about what they do and do not read. Maybe I took things the wrong way, but Brian for example seemed very intent on calling me a con man repeatedly, despite evidence to the contrary, and that's a personal attack, not a professional one.

That said, I'll try my best to take the high road in the future. It's difficult when you are so financially and emotionally involved in something, but then facing difficulty without breaking down is what being a good director is all about right? They have a right to say what they want to say, I won't interfere with that. I would just prefer it if every discussion didn't turn into us defending our position against a few select people.

Honestly, I thought Kholi or Brian might join, so maybe part of it is just disappointment that we won't be able to work with these talented people.

Here,... I got a song for you guys. You can listen to it on the road trip to CA

There's a dark cloud rising from the desert floor
I packed my bags and I'm heading straight into the storm
Gonna be a twister to blow everything down
That ain't got the faith to stand its ground
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted

The dogs on Main Street howl
'cause they understand
If I could take one moment into my hands
Mister I ain't a boy, no I'm a man
And I believe in a promised land
- Bruce Springsteen (The Promised Land)

Cause we all believe in the Promised Land baby... :)

Thanks for the song Trueindie. Maybe I'll go grab that off of itunes.

I hope you are still considering joining us. You seem like a cool guy, and I think we could really use a second guy that knows his way around Max. I'd love to see what the 2 of us could do with boujou, an Epic, and Max+fumefx+afterburn+thinking particles+vray+autograss+scatter. Imagine the possibilities!

Our landlord has a Murcialago that we could blow up in post!

Potpent AAA advertisement anyone?

There's only one way to resolve this.

I'll bring the trident.

Gawd! Quit being so defensive. You are so thinned skinned. You can't expect to get a round of applause on an internet forum. I like you Nate. You think big. The guy that annoys me is that Flicker dude and how he runs around he touting his connections to Bernie Lawson etc. What a F'ing poser.
