Close Encounters of The Third Kind

First of all, I love Spielberg. I mean I love him to no end. I think he is able to establish a non political emotional connection with me better than any other director. And I love his style too, which is different in almost every movie, cause he seems to be experimenting all the time.

That being said, close encounters was the only Spielberg film I had never seen. So after all this hullabaloo, I decided I should check it out. And I liked it, but marginally. I didn't think it was that fantastic. I liked the storytelling as usual, but.... it's really not Spielberg's fault. I just can't stand most science fiction (oops, now my reputation is dead amongst filmmakers).

But yeah, I thought it was okay. I thought Dreyfuss was pretty good. But I just couldn't get into the whole musical note business. But again it's not Spielberg's fault. I just lack imagination.

My favorite sci fi films: Predator, Matrix, Moon, Alien. Nothing else really comes to mind at this moment. I can't stand philosophical movies. Most scifi movies keep talking about things and human behavior that I cannot relate to.

So I guess I just like chocolate ice cream. Bitter chocolate.

I should probably mention that I haven't seen this movie in years, so there is that chance that some of the luster I first saw in it will have worn off by my next viewing. I'll post again down the road.

so.. regarding the digging up the yard scene two comments:

1) Teri Gar has great legs.
2) After Dreyfus climbs back into the house, just before the revealing news spot, there are a two different TV ads playing on the TV out of frame from which we here the entire jingle... was that blatant product placement or does Dreyfus's scowl at the Budweiser tune denote a "diss" to commercial jingles.. as there is a musical component to the film, I don't believe it was just "background"

Watched Spielberg's cut last night, the 1998 version. Totally holds up. Amazing film. Cannot believe all the real extras and actors. No CGI compositing group shots. All real. Awesome. And the interview with SS talking about the process is just great. Wow. What an undertaking! And it's so cool how the ending of the film was the inspiration for E.T.

Yeah I only watched the film last year. One of the most visually stunning films I've ever seen for one. And also one of Spielbergs best. I'm getting it on blu-ray when I can

2001 is about the most perfect film ever made.

Close encounters could use a few snipping here and there to speed things up just a bit. Its only a B+ because of that.

That's where the subjective thing comes in again. I like 2001, but I'd say that it's the movie that could use some cuts. A lot of superfluous shots IMO...
