Hello all.
I sort of jumped in with a couple of posts before properly introducing myself. My username is Swink, but in the real world I'm Tom. Both work.
I've focused on writing for the page mostly. Did an MA in Creative Writing, published a dozen or so short stories and a few poems in some decent journals. I pay the bills by teaching creative writing at a college. I've always been a film fan, though, and would like to try my hand at it. Last year I actually started writing a novel about a filmmaker in the 70s working his way through the ranks of the NFB (National Film Board of Canada) , but I found myself wanting to make a film rather than write about making a film.
My interests are divided between documentary and fiction. I really like Hoop Dreams and similar films, also films that are 'investigative'. But also love Godard Trafault, Kieslowski, some Cohen Brothers, a lot of the stuff that comes through Sundance, and on and on. Recently, totally against my expectations, I've gotten into Miyazaki (but I don't think I'll try my hand at animation). I have a doc and fiction project I'd like to try. Trying learn more before I launch into one.
Sorry to go on. This seems like a great community and I'm enjoying milling about.
Cheers,
Tom
