Basic UFO in Louisiana (experiment)

My current film project requires a few home video style "encounter" clips with special effects.

Here's a short proof-of-concept piece I did in preparation for that:

I didn't want to get too bogged down with articulated creature effects for this test, as it was mainly a trial of the Canon7D -> Computer -> VHS -> Final workflow, so a simple UFO video fit the bill. ;)

If anyone's interested, I can upload some still clips from the process.

P.S. I did all of the pseudo-Louisiana (heh) voices in the clip... each recorded separately. In an actual scenario, I'd want multiple people/voices interacting in real-time. :)

Ha! Sick, if you put that up on YouTube then people would be all over it.

I genuinely think that you're producing some of the best stuff I've seen on this site. Very polished and considered. I'm a fan :)

looks good. you can tweak a bit. the Sound is pretty great as for selling the "real" but hard to understand..

If you're doing a "documentary" you could add subtitles..

The UFO should flare like it would on a 3CCD camera.. the last frames, of the sun in the sky, check the VERTICAL line going all the way through the frame. The 3CCD cameras do that..

That's legit! Fun. I'm a sucker for ratty VHS footage. :)

I think the UFO taking off into the atmosphere could be tweaked to look better, but I dig all the stops and starts and the sunny shot at the end.

NickClapper, dlevanchuk, Cracker Funk:

Thank you guys for checking it out and posting feedback!
Nick, I appreciate the really kind words! :)

Good point! For the real deal, I'll be capturing audio off-camera, and won't crunch it so much.

In fact, I'm wondering if anyone would really object to having polished audio. You know... how "found footage" movies may have that amateur, low-fi appearance but they often sound good.

Maybe I'll go somewhere inbetween to keep intelligible dialog but with some effect to sell it as originating in-camera.

Also, good eye on the flare! Noted! :)

Hey, Flicker!

Yeah... to me, something still doesn't look right about the "blast off" part. I tried it at first with no flare, but that didn't look nice either. Heh. In hindsight I should've at least toned the brightness down a bit.

Thanks for the feedback!

What if it didn't actually blast off up into the heavens, but rather vanished or spun around quickly then disappeared? Or morphed into the background somehow, like a cloaking effect. ?

I'm no UFO expert, but it seems like it should be gone in a split second, without a trace.

Yeah, I can see that. I suppose it all depends on which galaxy it's from and if it's a used or new UFO. Could even be a rental. Some of those intergalactic travelers do drive clunkers. :P

Or maybe it slowly drifts away like in Close Encounters?

Gotta go! :abduct:

I think that's really good. To make it more "realistic," i would dim the lights on it. And when it blasts off, turn it into a dark grey blur instead of that bright spot or go completely the opposite way and have the whole screen blow out for 6 or 8 frames.

I saw a middle-east UFO hoax vid and the complaint on it was that the rate at which it took off was so fast, no living thing could have survived the force. Anyhow... LOL! It was fairly well-done in that it was shot from multiple angles. As I recall, it might've been a viral tactic for an upcoming movie or something. Hrm... will have to look it up again.

While I didn't put a ton of thought into it, that stuck with me and did affect my decision to spread it out over a handful of frames. BUT... yeah... I imagine even the speed I used would be too much to bear. (Unless it was an un-"manned" spy drone or something. ;))

Ernest: Thanks, man! Yeah... I definitely went too flashy.
Kinda makes me want to try another one soon. ;)

The tricky part for the upcoming project involves cloaking. Stuff that you don't really see until the creature/monster/whatever moves. Fun. :)

Very nice.
This project looks and sounds very substantial in content.
More so than a thousand times tired other found footage-type rubbish.
This is cool.

Your voice composition is fantastic.
I never would have guessed if you hadn't told.
Very impressive.

GL with this film.

Not many people know this but I love to look on youtube at the UFO stuff and about aliens. I have always found it interesting. I like the videos on Nazi UFos too. Ha... Most of the UFOs are probably airforce experimental aircraft. I am sure a few may be interdimensional beings. Sure there could be real aliens too the odds are high that they could exist and who knows they probably have been visiting the earth since the dawn of time like said on that show called Ancient Aliens on the History Channel.

Anyways, great job with this test footage. I would like to see you do more videos. I like the idea you did with the VHS tape it made it seem more real to me.
