Are audiences skeptical in believing in youth criminal characters?

I don't think it would be a good idea for him to have any scenes with him in beforehand, because then his character is no longer a surprise, when he appears at the scene to assassinate.
Fine. You make the movie the way you want to make the movie.

But you DID ask, "Are audiences skeptical in believing in youth
criminal characters?" And that answer is yes, audiences are skeptical
in believing in youth criminal characters unless it's explained to them.

If it works your way, then you will have a better answer. If it doesn't
and your audiences are skeptical then you will make changes in your
next movie.

Okay well for my new script here's how it goes. This woman is under police protection. The hitman is assigned to sneak in, kill her along with the cops, cause they will get in the way of course. The hitman gets killed, and fails, but almost succeeds. This is the hitman's only role, and there is no time for an explanation. He's not going to to talk to his victims, and explain his age, so the only option would be to have a flashback after he appears or something, which could get in the way of the moment of suspense.

I don't think it would be a good idea for him to have any scenes with him in beforehand, because then his character is no longer a surprise, when he appears at the scene to assassinate.

I agree on this last thing. But wat would jou do when jou where a 21 jear old killer? Would jou sneak into a house, killing a bunch of cops? Thats not a very pro thing to do.....Thats a very Noob thing to do....and jou want joure killer to be a pro.....So let the killer make some Pro decisions.

It sounds to me like you need to do more research on creating an assassin character. Also, how to best utilize one in your story.

Start watching movies with assassin characters. The Point Of No Return, Nikita, The Mechanic, The Man With The Golden Gun, A Killing Time, and even Ninja movies are worth seeing.

Actually in my opinion, I did not find Leon to be that convincing. I believed the explanation, but not a lot of the characters behavior.

But yes I will make my hitman older, but if I can't find an older actor, I will have him wear a mask the whole time.

You might consider introducing the young hitman first in another context - he's the young guy who no one pays attention to, such as the victim's grocery delivery guy, dog walker, local skateboarder, whatever. So his youth is giving him an opportunity to scout the kill in advance without being noticed. Then when the audience is amazed that the hitman is so young, it's within the context of this being an advantage for him.
