A creepy atmosphere can be achieved with good lighting
and any camcorder. Create shadows and other dark areas,
light only half the actors face, throw areas of light and dark
on the background.
The feeling of tension is achieved through editing. Make
sure when you shoot you have enough coverage and
plenty of inserts so you have choices.

I learned a trick where you can do a "push" just using your tripod. A slow push is good for suspense...
Set up your tripod so the camera is pointing between TWO legs forward, with one leg straight out the back.. then, just shorten the back leg.. now you can Pivot forward\back on the two front legs.. looks prety good too.

Experiment with extreme angles, very low and very high. A lower angle can give your character a menacing presence; a higher angle can make your character appear more helpless.
