If you are mechanically inclined you can change out the read/write head mechanism and or platters pretty easily if you have a drive thats similar to use as a donor. Ive saved a couple of drives this way.. I wouldnt recommend using the drives again afterwards, but just to get the info you need...

Do you have a microcenter nearby? They use an outside company and can diagnose the drive while you wait (over the net) then give you a quote.

I sold my canon and got a GH2. No regrets. Most of the stuff on my site was shot with it. I would recommend it to anyone. I have a 28mm, 14mm, and a 50mm. I shoot with the 50mm moreso than the others.

I recommend a china ball with a color correct flourescent bulb. That will set you back less than $30. Dont know where you would find one way up in Dacula though. :P
