    Next Step Above a DSLR

" Now we can shoot in pitch black—no need to use lights anymore, right? Not quite. It is certainly true that better ISO performance opens up more creative options, but understanding light as a storytelling tool is one of the—if not the—biggest skills you need to master as a filmmaker. There is...

    A7s help

What are you "upgrading" from? I have used the A7s (right alongside Philip actually) and it does create stunning images... But.. Low light ability is not a good reason to buy it.. If you shoot a night scene, it should look like it's at night. The cost offset to buying a couple lights and the...

Question about using a lens with no image stabilization.

Some useful info is here: http://vimeo.com/18234620 and here: http://nofilmschool.com/2010/11/glidecam-dslr It's a lot of work, so best to start right away. Also, using a tripod while at an angle will minimize the panning but still capture the walking/motion. Kind of like this video...

Question about using a lens with no image stabilization.

A steadicam is a form of IS.. "steady" cam... Practice is the key to getting a steady image from the camera no matter what the lens. Have you ever seen cinema lenses with image stabilization? Practice each shot on your list (you did make a list right?) and then practice it again, until it is...

Any general tips on how to make a film more dramatic cinematic or appear bigger

And also add more drama; crying, sadness, conflict, overjoyous characters, birth/death, these really help it be dramatic. Also, use rare and/or expensive props, locations, and topics. Very shallow depth of field on all shots, and make sure to use as many cliche's as possible... Just to keep it...

Help! DR-40 Hiss with External only/internal fine

Thank you stef! I have the noise with or without anything plugged in, whether port one or port two is used. I have been looking around quite a bit and think that saving a little longer for an even better unit than the Zoom or Tascam is worth my while. The PMD-661 seems to be a good compromise of...

Help! DR-40 Hiss with External only/internal fine

Thank you once again Alcove. It's going to take me a while to get the money for any replacement so hanging on a little longer will be worth the wait I think. I am partial to the PMD-661 after doing a bit of reading, and at least I can continue to practice techniques while I save me pennies.

Help! DR-40 Hiss with External only/internal fine

Point taken. Thank you Alcove. Will be "giving" the DR-40 to the boys for their unhindered usage and saving my "film maker" pennies for a better replacement. Unfortunately now is not a great time to need a replacement... So onto the big question: What to replace it with? Zoom H5/H6 or Tascam...

Help! DR-40 Hiss with External only/internal fine

Thank you Alcove, always appreciate your help here. Very sorry I didn't think to supply examples. Will do my best to get some set up. It worked fine previously but is used often by my teenage sons who normally treat "Dad's" stuff very very carefully. They only use it with the internal mic.s and...

Help! DR-40 Hiss with External only/internal fine

Wondering if anyone has had this happen? I went to hook up my AT6550 to record some ambient and I got major hiss. Dropped the record level, checked batteries, and reset to factory settings. Internal (built in mic.s) work as normal. Even when no mic is plugged in I get the same hiss, it does go...

Opinions Please. What to bring for run & gun.

Haha, at 0:34 I am silhouetted at the far right... Sadly I belong behind a camera rather than in front of one.... 8^)

So this workshop was pretty interesting, learned some stuff and met some great talented people. Thank you all for your input, turns out I could have packed so much lighter as B&H provided almost everything. Here's Philip Blooms little trailer of the event: http://youtu.be/e-TYpcG8G7A...

Opinions Please. What to bring for run & gun.

Thank you gorillaonabike, I appreciate the input. We are using Sony A7s cameras with metabones with a theme on low light shooting. I decided to bring both the Tamron lenses and the 50mm, as well as my 6D with the 40mm on it as a walk around cam for when we are not in session. They are providing...

Opinions Please. What to bring for run & gun.

Hmm ok, thanks. Lenses and accessories are optional but we are supplied with Sony A7s and metabones for our lens system. Just trying to figure out if I bring it all or just a 24-70??? Looking for experienced doc runners to shed light on street gear.. Thought I'd try anyway.
