One thing that I have to disagree on is watching movies without sound. Sound is so hyper important especially for directors,that you can't simply turn it off. Try Kubrick and you will destroy the majority of his films. The scene in Clockwork Orange...
But on a serious note,owning camera is not necessarily. Imagine you save up or w.e and buy RED. Than you are going to be stuck with it for all your projects. And what if a director who hires you wants the look of Alexa? Or 16mm or 35mm film? Or c100 for doc work?

The worst thing I have seen is Norman McLaren's tutorial on animation,where a poor girl had to reposition a paper cut out circle 1000 times! (correct me if I am wrong pls) in order to get super smooth motion. You can do it in 2 clicks nowadays. Sooooo painful to watch.

No way you get good crew by not feeding them. That is beyond acceptable. There is huge frustration from up and comers to do stuff for free,but on short narratives which never gonna sell,that's understandable. Not feeding crew is plain insulting.
