When to use a tripod and when to use a camera stabilizer?

With the advancement of camera stabilizers it makes me wonder which scenes are best done with a tripod or moving tripod and which scenes to be done with a camera stabilizer like the one shown below. Thank you for your suggestions and answers.

It all depends on the story you are trying to tell. There are various tools available to a DP/Director and each has their own philosophy and ideas. Some directors move the camera all the time,like complex moves etc. some prefer exact opposite and rarely move camera. Some fall in-between those 2 extremes.

And it depends on schedule, budget etc.

Tripod is perfect for still photography, stabilizers are handheld perfect for run and gun shots....

I think having some sort of steadicam/dolly for running scenes is essential because you're able to move with the subject and it puts the viewer in that motion with the subject that is moving fast.

Those handheld stabilizers are great, until after about 15 minutes when your biceps explode.

Ya that makes sense, it would be quite heavy I would imagine. What stabilizer rigs or systems would you guys recommend?

I'd say if you're at the level of asking about when you'd use a tripod vs. a stabilizer you probably should just start with the tripod and not worry about stabilizers yet.

I've used tripod. various kinds but they never offered that floating feel that camera stabilizers provide. I have seen lot's of test footage and know that it is the look that I want instead of tripods that have to remain in a stationary position.

Any recommendations for camera stabilizers would be appreciated.
