Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation

Hi Guys, saw this on in internal bulletin from the company i work for, look's really interesting to me. Nice to see some independant film makers getting a good break. I think i'm gonna make the trip down to London to see it. It's basically a fan made adapation of Raiders of the Lost Ark but apparently its so good Steven Spielberg really liked it. Vue and IGN.com are showing it as a charity premiere with the film makers there answering questions and a few other bits going on.

Here's a synopsis of it:

Hailed as ‘the greatest fan film yet’, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation is a 100-minute recreation of the classic film. Started in 1982 by Chris Strompolos and Eric Zala at the age of 12 years old, it took all their pocket money, unwavering dedication, astonishing ingenuity, plus a basement fire and the loss of a pair of eyebrows before the film was finally ‘in the can’ seven years later.

For 15 years, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation nearly became a forgotten masterpiece until a screening at a film festival by Harry Knowles made it an overnight sensation. It was subsequently featured in Vanity Fair and The Today Show. Fans include Eli Roth, Quentin Tarantino and even Steven Spielberg, who personally wrote to Chris and Eric: “Wanted to let you know how impressed I was with your very loving and detailed tribute to our Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

IGN.com and Vue are proud to bring this highly talked about, but rarely seen cult classic to the UK for the first time ever. Fans will have the opportunity to meet and greet the film makers and take part in a Q&A session. Plus, see exclusive props and win artwork from the original series and even indulge in some delicious bites at an Indy-themed food and drink reception.

Only really any use to those of you who are in or arond London but i thought the whole thing was pretty interesting and kinda cool.

I saw it about ten years ago here in Los Angeles. Glad to see
it's getting a screening in London after all these years.

That's friggin' awesome. :D

Someone actually referenced that flick here, a few weeks ago, as an example... but didn't link a trailer or preview.

Man, I wanna see the whole thing now. :(

Ah thats cool made up you guys have heard of it, I brought myself a ticket for it and booked a coach down to do London for the day. 14 hours on a coach to watch 1 film I hope its good!. Be nice to have a talk with the film makers being that I wanna become a film maker myself and yeah it's great to see a film like this getting some good publicity.

I love the adaptation. Saw the whole thing a few years back. Amazing what these kids did with zero budget and imagination. And I'm glad they got Spielberg's attention.

I referenced it a couple of weeks ago...and I posted several links to articles and such--although I couldn't find a link to the actual film.

Awesome i'm quite looking forward to meeting them now, anyone know if they have done anything else since?

I know someone is making a movie (or has) based on these kids story to recreate Raiders...I'm not sure if the actual guys are involved though.

Yeah, they're involved. Daniel Clowes has been writing and rewriting the script for a while, and it's going to be produced by Scott Rudin. The story of the three guys who made it is pretty incredible; I've written about them pretty extensively, both on my fan film news blog FanCinemaToday.com and in a book I did on the history of fan films called Homemade Hollywood (they get a whole chapter to themselves, 'cause their story is so over the top). Other fan filmmakers in there include Dan Poole (who swung off a 6-story building for his Spider-Man fan film in 1992) and Sandy Collora, who did Batman: Dead End, although they're just the tip of the iceberg.

Anyway, someone was looking for a trailer, so here's a link to my site which has a video clip about them on it:

Oh, someone wanted to know if they've done anything since this flick--one has become a multimedia artist around San Francisco, and the other two have written an action script called What The River Takes, which they're shopping around Hollywood.
Hope this helps,
Clive
