Hedwig and the Angry Inch -- cold/bluish effect?

Anyone seen the amazing Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Have it on DVD? If so, I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this question. In Hedwig's flashbacks when she meets Luther (as Hansel), the film looks cold and bluish, and somehow a little more like an old '70s or '80s movie, I guess. It's something to do with the color and maybe with the quality of the image.

You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0ZMR74qno4 (Fast forward to around 1:50 to when it transitions into Hedwig's story world, and compare the stuff after that with the warmer tone earlier in the clip.)

What are they doing? Is it a blue filter? Post-production effects? I'd love to get that look.

Since it's daytime, I don't suspect it's a blue gel on a light creating the effect, although they might have used one for a starting effect. I think they are using a blue post effects filter. Obviously they have adapters and lenses...but I do not have that much experience in using these on digital cameras...perhaps they inserted a blue filter in front of the lens as they shot? I don't know.

It's not a hard look to achieve I imagine.

This film looks odd and fascinating. Kind of like a Gilliamesk trip into madness...
