movies Movie Locations Thread

Usually only if I think I recognise the location, or know that I ought to because it's somewhere I've already been.

Or if it's a cool-looking place and I want to find out whether or not it exists in real life. The clinic where James Bond first met Madeleine Swann exists, and is on my "must go there" list!

I am not sure how it is now, but about 10 years ago I was in old downtown Port Arthur, Texas, and now I think, damn, this old downtown is an amazing movie set lol

The Sabine hotel (Hotel Sabine) was crazy...abandoned since the 30s?

One of the best shortcuts for location scouting is the Koya series from Fricke and crew. Since these films have no actors, and are essentially curated collections of location photography, it's a veritable treasure trove of available shooting locations worldwide. These guys filmed across scores of countries for decades, with the main goal of finding photogenic or memorable shots. There are maybe 8 of these movies, originally funded by FF Coppola.

I always do this i always find it so interesting when something is filmed in my home town (which is Halifax) the latest film that I had seen been filmed here was the Wait For Me film which will premiere in march I think. Although happy valley isnt a film a lot of that series was filmed in halifax it was great!

My wife and I love Halifax. Well, Nova Scotia altogether. But yes, some of our favorites have been shot there, around Halifax, Chester, and Lunenberg.

We haven’t been back since COVID hit, but I really want to make trip back up there.

And I do often look up locations on films and series, just out of curiosity.

I love to see the locations for my favorite movies. On the Howling disc, we get to see the locations now, like 40 years later. Same with the disc for Basket Case. It's cool to see how things change, plus you get to find out that what was presented in the movie was not at all the way it was when they shot it. In Basket Case, I think the hotel manager's office was actually the elevator in some building. They opened the doors and put a desk in there. lol! THAT'S movie magic.

I've wanted to make a pilgrimage to the steps leading to M street in The Exorcist for many years. To stand where Father Karris leaped to his death. Where Lieutenant Kinderman stood while investigating the death of Burk Dennings.

When I lived in the NY Tri-State area I would go into NYC quite a bit. Not only would you see locations used in many TV shows and films, but you would be unable to walk down certain streets as they were shooting at the time. Like the time I came out of a meeting and they were shooting "I Am Legend" in Washington Square Park.

What's bizarre is that some of the locations are "enhanced" in post, so they don't actually look that way in real life.

I grew up about three miles from Playland Amusement Park in Rye, NY. Quite a few films had sequences shot there - "Big" and "Fatal Attraction" as examples. "What do you mean the Dragon Coaster is shut down today?!?!?! Another fricking movie?"

There's a whole village in Ireland (Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow) that's become a sort of default extension of the local movie studio. For those who know the layout of its main street(s), it's instantly recognisable, although it can be challenging to match up all of the filmed architecture with what you see in real life. These aren't (usually) post-production enhancements, though, but genuine set builds accompanied by staging posts for the construction workers and their materials. That in itself has become a tourist attraction, especially when it's a Big Name production that's behind the latest makeover, e.g. Disney's modifications for their sequel Disenchanted.

Being too familiar with local real-life geography has its disadvantages, though. Like trying to make sense of a newly-arrived tourist's tortuous taxi-ride from the airport to their city centre hotel, that takes them past a dozen famous landmarks that even the most fare-hungry cab-driver would struggle to fit into a single trip.

This reminds me of my first trip to Salzburg, Austria decades ago. The number of American tourists eager to see "the church where Maria got married" from "The Sound of Music" was truly impressive :)

Sure why else would you go to Salzburg, if not for a "Sound of Music" location tour? :D The convent (and especially the cemetry-courtyard where the family hid from the Germans) is much more interesting ...

My sister is Sound of Music devotee and has had Salzburg on her Must Visit list for at least twenty years, but despite making plans to go there several times, something always gets in the way. After many failed attempts to tag it on to one of her many other travels, she finally decided to make it a single destination holiday. All flights and hotel rooms booked ... and then Austria went into Covid lockdown.
