The ridiculous part of this is that the crowdfunders get no tangible reward for having stroked Braffs ego. It would be a lot more ethical if they could get a DVD or Bluray of the film once it hits that stage. That would constitute pre-ordering or pre-selling, forbidden by Kickstarter but easily gotten around. This would make the prospect of funding a mainstream film that is going to be marketed for every dollar possible a bit more acceptable.
 
Ethics have nothing to do with it. Nobody is being forced to do anything. Contributing is entirely voluntary and everyone knows exactly what they get in return. For some people getting their own ego stroked is more of a reward than something tangible like a DVD - you can go down to the store and buy one of those any time.
