The latest in youtube screwing over indie film developers...

Now they say that if your video has any inappropriate COMMENTS it will be demonitized and you will receive $0 for all your hard work. Also if the video contains anything sexual, bad language, or violence they may demonetize your video on youtube and you will receive $0 for all your hard work.

Wow and I thought things were bad for us on youtube in 2018
I saw this reported on slashdot

I kind of agree with it. If my feature films that I have are "Christian content", then I would expect advertisers that are friendly toward such. However, I get a lot of what I would consider inappropriate comments daily that have to be deleted. It sounds to me like YouTube is just wanting creators to take responsibility and moderate, rather than just upload a video and forget about it. I don't see a problem with that. At the end of the day, they are LETTING us host our hard work on THEIR platform. If we don't like their rules, find somewhere else or start our own.

There are certain types of videos that should not have ADs.
If I want to go see a news report about a mass shooting what advertiser wants me to sit for 15 seconds and listen to their product first ? Nobody! Makes total sense not to put ads on that video.

how are bigger youtubers suppose to monitor their comments?

I follow some people that have 100,000+ followers and post regularly, I can (and often do) watch an upload 15-30 minutes after its uploaded and there's so many comments already that I cant scroll through them to the bottom

youtube should take responsibility for blocking trolls on their platform since they are the ones that let them join same way its indietalks job to remove trolls or facebooks job to remove offensive content, its a job that fall to the site not the legitimate users

I agree with YouTube. Advertisers don’t want their ads to end up on certain content.

They’re protecting their bread and butter. I prefer Prime Video.

However, I learned after posting my first joint on there is to invest in marketing and sell it instead of allowing prime members to view it for free with their subscription. One sale is worth more than 5 hours of viewing. You have a very popular film to profit like that.

This isn't a permanent solution and it does hurt people for a short time but with so many advertisers pulling from Youtube they had to act fast to keep the damage minimal. and this doesn't affect all content. this isn't just something they're adding to the algorithm to demonetize content if it has a bad comment. I'd say most of these are going to be hand picked if they have under aged people in said video and the comment section has quite a lot of inappropriate comments they will disable and report the comments. This isn't the end or anything. The lady in that tweet, Jessica Ballinger only had her sons gymnastics videos demonetized. and under the circumstances I'm surprised she can't understand that. while they do have all their comments turned off for the time being that doesn't really stop them from making the videos. I checked a few videos and they are still getting lots of ads.

I don't really see how youtube is screwing over indie films? these drastic measures are being taken for videos with under aged people in said video. and if you happen to get flagged for it, it's more then likely a mistake.
Youtube has made a whole lot of mistakes and while this isn't a perfect permanent solution. it'll have to work until they can figure something else out.

There is a function in the Youtube Creator Studio which allows you to monitor comments based on certain words that the channel creator deems inappropriate. You can also just disable comments completely, but that eliminates your ability to stay connected with your audience. In all reality, if YouTube was to censor certain language, that is 100% their responsibility, especially in this context. There is no reason that a channel creator should be held responsible for other people's actions.

I do follow some youtube channels that have around 150k followers and it would be a full time job to sensor all the comments that the videos get. Specially when videos are published almost every day.

YouTube is having a hard time keeping up with bigotry in the comments.
There is whistleblow content out there thriving on community writingnasty comments: they (advertisers) want no part in that.

Fosta/Sesta is probably a reason for the sexual ban.
Patreon and Tumbler already had their crackdown on 'sexual content'. Including no nude fine art photography, illustrations, etc.

Their are/were channels doing just that PLUS adding malicious conspiracy theories to that news. And the have/had a following wanting more and accepting the adds.

The internet is almost broken: seized by corporates with double standards and foul mouthed agitators. Plus the endangerment of net neutrality and the collateral effects of fosta/sesta (which does not fix what is supposed to fix, but enables censorship).

Supportive communities like IT is what the promise of internet is and what the future should be. Freedom and happiness.

I already had a funeral ceremony for the $5 YouTube will never pay me last year ;)

Add "conservative speech" to the list of things that may get you demonetized. If they don't demonetize it then they will just shadow ban your channel.

For vlog producers who have been producing for years, like PewDiePie, his content is kind of raunchy, but he's already made his fortune on YT. I personally would keep my vlog on the clean side. If children cannot watch it what's the point?

Well when I made this thread i didnt know it was in response to pedophilia and focused on videos with children in that regard. I can kind of understand it as a knee jerk reaction but i think this problem has been around for years and they should have a better system in place.

People who make those kinds of creepy comments on youtube videos should have their IPs traced, warrants issued and their computers searched for child pornography. If you're going around making lewd ogling comments about children online I would say that qualifies as reasonable suspicion. much bigger issue than youtube can handle.

define lewd comments about children though, the age of consent and morality is different in multiple countries/cultures and unless your checking ID its very hard to accurately gage a persons age, over the years in acting and modelling (as well as life) Ive met up to 50 year olds that look barely legal and 12+ year olds that easily look 25... unless we are talking very young children this is just an obvious gray area

Be a censor

Producers will have to stay on top of things. If the comments can viewed before they are accepted as posting material, that is what everyone will have to do. If there is no filtering of any kind, producers will be up a creek, as there are too many knuckleheads who think they are being clever or cute. Maybe YT needs to write some kind of algorithm that eliminates certain words from posts, including misspellings of indecent words (like F-U or F#K or Fuh Q)--things like that. Those comments would not be able to be submitted, period. That would help Producers a lot. Less reading through inappropriate comments ourselves.

Thats bogus! How can you prevent other people from commenting inappropriately? What if I spam foulness in other peoples videos as a power play because I hate my life? (Obviously I wouldn't do that but there are people who troll for fun you know)
They should just remove comments entirely and creators can plug their discord or some other place to communicate with a community...
