YouTube a given? Vimeo only? hmmm...

I've been seeing a lot of great shorts, music videos, etc. that are only available on Vimeo because their compression and quality is superior to YouTube's.

For our upcoming music video release I am inclined to post it only on Vimeo, but have a hunch that the band and their fans will freak out if it's not available on YouTube -- the perception being "If it's not on YouTube, it's not really online ... or .. it won't go viral ... or ... you're missing out on a wider audience."

Vimeo is a boon for filmmakers because of the quality (you can upload unique thumbnails, set the video with password and more) but Vimeo does not have the same name recognition as YouTube.

On another note, we can embed YouTube videos here on IT which is a great feature, but can't do the same with Vimeo movies. Grrrr...

What are your thoughts on posting only on Vimeo? Better to post on both? I have before and people inevitably watch the YouTube link over Vimeo.

Another reason why I'm hesitant not to post on YouTube is that YT videos can be watched on mobile devices without an account upgrade or additional cost, but to activate mobile viewing on Vimeo you need to upgrade to a Pro account, which I may do at some point but would rather wait.

Anyone else on the fence with this?

Why would you only want it on one, rather than both? Isn't the idea to reach as far and wide as possible? Of course, since the Vimeo is better quality, the band can embed that on their webpage, but what benefit is there to excluding viewers?

Not being snarky here, of course, just genuinely curious!

I think both is a wise decision, it's what we do. From what I've seen, they're more or less two different audiences. There's a little crossover, but not too much. YouTube get's way more play form the average joe, Vimeo from people that consider themselves artistic.

The Vimeo community is way more mature for sure. Just go through comments, everyone is polite versus the typical "I HOPE YOU DIE" on YouTube haha.

Both.

Visual/presentation purists get theirs.
Exposure to the unwashed masses get theirs.

Longhorn Steakhouse vs. McDonalds.
Is there really a need to pick one?

Josh, I'm with you. I think posting on BOTH and anywhere else (BlipTV, etc.) is where it's at. But I know there are folks who post exclusively on vimeo.

everyone is polite versus the typical "I HOPE YOU DIE" on YouTube haha.

Haha! True! YouTube is like the wild and Vimeo is far more civilized.

DailyMotion is big in Europe and second only to YouTube.

They are offering filmmakers a site where they can stream videos that are as long as 60 minutes, which is fantastic for web series considerations.

That's why I put a test video in HD there. An IT guy I work with and I discovered the buffering / streaming problem where HD videos skip and jump. I emailed their tech support about the problem. The IT guy suspects it could be a bandwidth problem with their web site.

One of these days, DailyMotion may be another consideration once they get smooth playback with HD streams.

I really prefer vimeo. But besides the reasons already mentioned here, many people have difficulty viewing videos on vimeo. So, just to add to the already-foregone conclusion -- yep, both is best.

easier to find stuff on youtube -- better searching and linking facilities in place... larger user base as well.

Vimeo has such good quality that audience's budget for newer hardware comes into play... I couldn't even watch Vimeo vids until my most recent upgrade due to the footage bandwidth and the compression killing my processor on my older machines. How many potential viewers are you comfortable alienating (it's a legit question, not a jab)?

This is all great insight and input, folks. We'll definitely be uploading to YouTube, Vimeo, and other sites. Vimeo for quality (better compression) and YouTube for quantity (hits, views, audience, reach).

Maybe I'll include the vimeo URL on the YouTube clip and vice versa.

OK, thanks!
