This article says that Wattpad allows the authors to make money from fanfiction, but that's dangerous, because the current law, as I understand it, does not allow fans to make money from fanfiction. The best example are the Star Trek fan films - they were getting more sophisticated, with ever-increasing budgets, until Paramount sued one of the fan companies, and all the production companies making Star Trek fan films had to shut down.
Still, this can be a good way to get started - years ago, I wrote some notes for a Batman story, but nothing came of it. Now, I'm writing more earnestly about a Superman trilogy, and, as I do so, I'm inspired to continue the Batman one as a parallel to Superman.
