Working on Direct to VOD...

This may seem strange to some but my main long term goal is to work in the industry on low budget films that go straight to VOD. I say it may seem strange to some because usually people want to work in the mainstream big budget blockbuster sector of the film industry. So my question is - what advice can people offer on how to break into that low budget direct to VOD sector of the industry?

There really are no differences breaking into the VOD industry than into
the mainstream big budget blockbuster sector of the film industry. In
some ways it may be even more difficult. Most films made for VOD are
made with no "industry" connections at all - just a filmmaker making a
movie with the resources they have. The prodCo's/distributors that do
exist have essentially the same roadblocks that the big studios have.

Write several scripts that can be made for a low, low budget. Research
companies that make these movies and send in a query letter.

Thank you for your response Directorik. Do you think that also looking at becoming a producer too would be helpful? I have thought about whether I should pursue that as well. Roger Corman comes to mind as the type of producer I would like to be. I would also like to help others make low budget independent films in that capacity too.

Sure, that's a fine option. It can only be e benefit to you, your
career and your understanding of the business to look into
becoming a producer.
