editing Whitening Teeth in FCP :)

Hey all.

So I'm cutting an actor's slate of an older woman who has extremely yellow/brown teeth. Also, we have a white backdrop which we've color corrected even brighter white, so her teeth stand out even more.

Now, I understand how to constrain a specific color and mask that out to correct by itself...but it grabs bits of her hair as well.

Can you select an area (box around her mouth) by itself and key that selection area alone?

Also, how would *you* whiten teeth? Is it a crazy headache and not worth it? Or is it done from time to time?

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea how to do that. Hopefully someone else does and will chime in.

Is there no chance of a reshoot? She could whiten her teeth using white strips or any other teeth whitening method.

Goodluck!

If you want to keep it all within Final Cut - duplicate the shot, and put it on the layer above. Use a four- or eight-point garbage mask on the top layer to roughly select around her mouth - you'll probably need to feather it etc. after the next step. Apply a three way colour corrector to the top layer, using the limit controls (in the lower part of the visual colour corrector window) to pick out just the teeth. Use the normal colour correction controls to push the teeth away from yellow and brighten them. Render out!
