What's your favorite part of the job?

There are SO many aspects to filmmaking... conception, screenwriting, storyboarding, casting, set design, costume design, location scouting, shooting, ADR, editing, color-correction, sound editing, effects, sound effects, marketing, and then finally seeing the end product (and hopefully getting some money outta that.)

And that doesn't count stuff I wasn't able to think of off the top of my head.

What's your favorite part of the process, and why? I feel it's an interesting thing to discuss.

I don't think I've really fully experienced everything in filmmaking to give a proper answer.

At the moment, I would say actually directing and being on set. It's so much fun, but it can also be stressful, but that's to be expected. I like the stress.

Other than that? I would say watching people watch the end process. I like that part, because if they like it, it makes me feel a sense of accomplishment.

I think perhaps the issue is: Who are you aiming your question at?

A Cinematographer is likely going to love the shoot the most; they're certainly not going to love the part where they do the screenwriting, for example.
A Sound Designer is going to love the Sound design part the most
A Composer is going to love the composing part the most
A Screenwriter is going to love the writing part the most...

I feel like you're aiming this at Directors, and in that case I can't comment as I'm a Cinematographer.

I love writing. I do it therapeutically and almost all the time. It's not something, necessarily, that gives me an immense amount of pure enjoyment, but it's something I feel compelled to do.

Outside of that, within the filmmaking process, I enjoy being on set but the best feeling, as both writer and director, is seeing when things get pieced together. The first time you see a really tight cut of a scene is an incredible feeling.

I agree with Jana rox; unless you're talking to people that are writer/director/actor on all their pictures, you're going to get biased answers.

From what experience I've gained from the small, personal films I've made, I can say that I like acting the least. Not because I don't enjoy it, but because I'm not that good at it. It's not my calling. The only reason I do it at all is because I never had anyone to star in the pictures but ME.

I like writing the most; it was my original passion, and it's less stressful. I'm simply sitting in a chair, feet up, banging out ideas to go into the film. Couldn't much more peaceful for me.

Editing isn't something I've done a lot of. Mostly just cutting out bloopers and the "ACTION!" and "Cut!" parts. Really nothing overly complicated.

As a sound editor/designer my favorite happens all too rarely; flying second chair with an experienced rerecording mixer who turns all my dialog editing, Foley performance/editing, sound FX creation/editing, music/score editing into something magical.

I'm aiming the question at anybody who wants to answer it. Though it would make more sense for people who are involved with more than one part of the process to answer.

i see that nobody has replied, which leads me to believe everyone here hates filmmaking.
What an odd conclusion to draw. No one answers immediately and
that leads you to believe everyone here hates filmmaking. You should
take a look around the boards. I think you'll find everyone here loves
filmmaking. Perhaps you asked a question many people weren't
interested in answering. I love filmmaking - I do not have a favorite
part of the job so I didn't answer. don't think my lack of answering
your question mean I hate filmmaking.

Oh wait, you're just being sarcastic.

You got it, mussonman, everyone here hates filmmaking.

What is your favorite part of a puppy?
