I've always wondered, why have film festivals adopted laural leaves for the official selections? Is there some kind of backstory to this, or is it just because it looks fancy?

Didn't Apollo wear a wreath of laurel as a symbol of winning a lyre competetion? I think the use of laurel wreaths for a victory is a western tradition rooted in this mythology. How it was appropriated by the film industry, I don't know , although it doesn't seem to be a giant leap as mucof film seems to be myth??
