what's with the laural leaves?

I've always wondered, why have film festivals adopted laural leaves for the official selections? Is there some kind of backstory to this, or is it just because it looks fancy?

The palm leaf has been a sign of luxury, victory and respect for a few thousand years.

I've no idea who adopted it for film awards, but it's been around quite some time.

Didn't Apollo wear a wreath of laurel as a symbol of winning a lyre competetion? I think the use of laurel wreaths for a victory is a western tradition rooted in this mythology. How it was appropriated by the film industry, I don't know , although it doesn't seem to be a giant leap as mucof film seems to be myth??

PALM TREE: A symbol of prosperity and beauty

LAUREL TREE: Because it's an evergreen it has become a symbol of eternity

Receiving a Palm leaf is generally considered the same kind of honor as receiving a crown of laurels...

So, the important words here are Prosperity, and Eternity

You won an award, so you will be 'prosperous' and the film will live in 'eternity' ... :)
