The Last Stand - 6/10
What a cinematic style tossed salad + casserol of left overs disaster.
The dialog and dramatic acting were already lame, but the director seemed to approach the entire project with a POV of "Let's throw in a little bit of everything out of the cinematic bag to keep this interesting!"
Parts of the film were engaging while others were just lame.
Pass on it if you want.
Jack Reacher - 7/10
It's like a "Meh... " version of the far superior 'State of Play.'
A: I can't stand it when "somebody" decides they're going to make an obviously older actor "younger looking" by coloring their hair all the same possible color of their 20's. Pfft. Yeah. It looks like sh!t and doesn't fool anyone. Be old. No one cares.
B: I don't like heavy handed "Let's fabricate a mythical character of
EPIC proportions!" Good. God. Get over yourself.
The key conspiracy details were kinda poorly put together - you get the gist of it, but... whatever.
Watch
'State of Play' for a corporate crime thriller. It's better.
Machine Gun Preacher - 4/10
Skip it.
It does a poor job of communicating the relevant issues of the film.
Basically it just makes the protagonist look like a madman going from one addiction to another, then the film unravels to an end out in the Sudanese bush - literally and figuratively.
A better biopic would be
'A Mighty Heart.'
Kill List - 8.5/10
Almost an excellent film.
Wonderful acting, character creation, and cinematography - especially for the lo/no budget beginner. Definitely one to study for camera technique.
The story's greatest downfall is the rather absurd third act & ending. A total WTF event that ruins an otherwise increasingly interesting film.
The camera style is somewhat like Malick's
'The Tree of Life' sans super wide angle lens.
The directorial style favors Beir's
'After the Wedding' a lot.
I'd recommend watching the three together for a trifecta.
Okay. Which of you jokers recommended
'Beyond the Black Rainbow'?
1/10
Uh... Yeah.
Might I also recomend
'Black Moon' and
'Dogtooth.'
