What's a gooday to find actors?

I don't have any friends in filmmaking at all. I'm hoping to go to film school soon. But till then, what's a way you guys have had luck getting actors? I know I can get friends, but they are all too shy in front of the camera, and I'm trying to find people for some convincing roles. Anyone have any suggestions?
 
At their private homes, in coffee shops in New York Or L.A (look for the folks crying and tearing their hair out over a ripped-up audition sheet)
