What software or firmware is the best for aspect ratios?

I tried taping black tape to the top and bottom of the view screen of my camera, to measure out an aspect ratio of 2.40:1. I am just using it as a guide to frame the shot, so I can crop it to 2.40 later.

However, it is too difficult cause I cannot see the aperture, shutter speed etc, on the viewscreen, nor can I see if the camera is recording unless I bend it up and look beyond the tape.

Out of all the software is there one that is better and safer to use? Thanks.

I put all the folders on the card, including the crop marks one. What do you mean by image overlays? Basically I follow the tutorials online. They say to go to 'cropmarks', in the magic lantern menu and to select the cinescope 2 one. That's what I do. In the tutorial, it then shows how the crop marks then appear on the screen afterwords. But when I do it, nothing happens, and their is no crop marks after.

Okay thanks, but before when I put magic lantern on my camera card, it screwed up the card, and now the card will not work properly anymore. I have another camera card, but don't want to screw up that one too. I tried deleting magic lantern off the other one several times, but the computer will not delete it and a pop up comes up saying it cannot. But if I can get it to work I will use magic lantern.

Unlock write protection on the card.
(Did you check that??? That little thing on the side of the card?)

Well someone else is shooting the movie and we tried the clear tape but she says she has a hard time seeing where the tape is during shots that involve moving the camera. If we can have it so you can see the display without seeing the video behind it, it might be better for her. If not, then we can do our best with clear tape.

Than draw a line on the edge of the tape.
Or use multiple layers of that tape.
Or get semi-transparant tape, so you can still see the red-rec dot and not be confused.
Or cut away a piece of the non-transparant tape to make the rec visible.

You always say you want to be creative, but you seem unable to think of any solution by yourself.
You keep thinking in problems and limit yourself with certain tools/rules.
You should be thinking about the goals and find the solution to get there, regardless of tools and 'rules'.
And when something doesn't work properly, try to check why.

Just like your memorycard.
I never heard of a card getting 'broken' by the 0s and 1s in it's memory.
You can't delete files.
Can you write on it?
No?
Is write protection on?
Did you ever notice that little slide on your cards?
Yes or no: it's time to look at it now.
(If it's not write protection, you did something else wrong to damage it.)
