What is DSLR?

I've been searching through the internet, and I keep seeing stuff about DSLR. To a total newbie who knows nothing, Google isn't helping either. What is it?

As you all know I am not on the DSLR bandwagon - don't
like them at all for making movies. But I have always used
a camera body with interchangeable lenses so I appreciate
that these cameras offer that option on a low budget.

I'm glad that the top four (Sony, Canon, Panasonic and JVC)
are all developing video cameras to meet that need.

But, are these recommended for [mainly] video-making people?

As you now know, many movie makers recommend DSLR
cameras for video making. It's great that we movie makers
have more options.
