What Film Was This?

A friend of mine told me to watch a film awhile ago that was similar to a screenplay I'm writing. The film is a man in a coma, from his point of view. The nurses and doctor are characters in his altered reality and keep communicating with him subconsciously trying to wake him.

The title is one word, I thought it was "Stay" but that's not it. If anyone knows what movie this is, could you please help.

There is a movie starring Hayden Christiansen titled "Awake"

Synopsis:
The story focuses on a man who suffers "anesthetic awareness" and finds himself awake and aware, but paralyzed, during heart surgery. His mother must wrestle with her own demons as a drama unfolds around them, while trying to unfold the story hidden behind her son's young wife.

This might be the movie your friend was talking about.

"Awake" sounds pretty neat; I'll have to check that out. I would have guessed it as "Stay" as well, since there are lots of elements of what you're talking about. I'm also reminded a bit of "Identity" though no coma involved there (definitely worth watching).

What I'm most reminded of is a book, "Maribou Stork Nightmare" by Irvine Welsh (you'd know him from Trainspotting). There's a lot about levels of awareness in a coma, and transitions between them. Really clever and fast paced...and really awful and uncomfortable (it is Welsh, after all). I love it, and it'll definitely give you ideas to compare and contrast with what you are working on...but I can't recommend it without a warning!

Hmm....that sounds familiar. It reminds me of the foreign film "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", although that hardly meets your criteria.

However, I'm positive it isn't Awake, for two reasons: 1) Awake doesn't involve a character in a coma (he's sedated) and there is nothing to do with alternate realities/subconscious communication, and 2) I know of no one who in their right mind would recommend Awake.

My bad. Just the first film that came to mind.

That sounds like "Stay" to me. I can't think of another movie off the top of my head that matches the description.

Maybe it is stay. I'll watch it and see it.

Diving Bell and the Butterfly is beautiful. I actually just finished reading the book, it's sitting here beside me. The movie is one of my favorites (although not actually a foreign film, it was directed by an american director/writer. He just kept it french because he thought it would take away from the feel if he translated it).
