My first impression? The writer seems arrogant. He seems like a loudmouth who needs to feel significant; hence why he thinks so highly of his opinion. He also seems to be a bit un-cool. This is a hard vibe to describe. The only thing I can put my finger on is the fact that he's (likely) a 40+ blog writer who uses excessive swearing to sound cool and badass
That's just my opinion though. As for the advice, he makes some good points, but nothing special really. I already knew most of the information, and I'm guessing most screenwriters who have taken some minimal time to read up on the subject would too. Obviously his million dollar formula doesn't work very well though, or else he'd be writing movies instead of blog posts
I mean, come on. This guy isn't fooling anyone. Saying "I've given substantial creative input to probably some of your favorite movies" is BS! If he can't even give us a few notable names, what's the point in even bragging? That's like me saying "I've directed a number of good movies" (first of all, good is subjective, and second, zero is technically a number)
Or you could go to FILM SCHOOL and enter CONTESTS. The grandaddy of these is the Nicholl Fellowship, which is judged by old white liberals with too much time on their hands and tends to be weighted toward stuff like I WAS MOLESTED DURING THE HOLOCAUST and CANCER MCALCOHOLIC’S HEARTWARMING REDEMPTION AT THE HANDS OF A PRECOCIOUS ETHNIC CHILD. If you make it to the semifinals, miserable underpaid assistants will be forced to read your script before passing because it’s “too small” and “too dark.’'
I don’t want to give specifics about projects that I worked on. I don’t want people figuring out who my old boss is, because I’ve written that he should be raped by hyenas with dicks of fire.
You are not trying to make good movies, you are trying to make Hollywood movies.
Interesting read. It had some easy to understand (incredibly dumbed down) examples of structure, etc... but then it lost me at the last line.
Nope, I don't give a crap about Hollywood, I just want to make good movies. So clearly this article wasn't aimed at readers like me.
he's (likely) a 40+
And is this a good or bad thing?
