As the DP, or director? The DP's eye should be on the camera. As a director, it's up to you if you like to work with monitors (taps) or if you like to watch the action. It can come in handy for other members of the crew, like the scripty.
If there is any way you can possibly afford to have one yes. First it allows the director to see what is being filmed, second it allows the DP to see what's being filmed more clearly that the crappy little camera monitor that changes if you look at it from an angle. My DP didn't flip out the camera monitor the whole 5 days we were shooting he only looked in the HD monitor. If you really have money to spend, get one with waveform. It makes the DP's job much easier.
